required coordination.<\/p>\n<p>Planning.<\/p>\n<p>Influence.<\/p>\n<p>Not panic after an accident.<\/p>\n<p>A cover-up.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel sat across from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Martin now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed from frustration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStroke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why are you still afraid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Martin wasn\u2019t the end of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>A larger truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was above him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know there were other accounts. Other hospitals. Other companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never had the whole structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut somebody alive does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for the bag.<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you walk out with those papers, be careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain, that sounds like a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who searched Caleb\u2019s room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho asked you about Thomas\u2019s papers last week?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>I moved toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He looked genuinely frightened now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man named Daniel Vale called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin\u2019s son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe runs Meridian now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same company still existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether Thomas left records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he know Caleb was investigating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly shouted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeart attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every path seemed lined with graves.<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself to think.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Living.<\/p>\n<p>Running Meridian.<\/p>\n<p>Aware of Thomas\u2019s old papers.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly aware of Caleb\u2019s search.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Daniel know David?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was young then. Maybe twenty-two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut involved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t take Thomas\u2019s property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel picked up the canvas bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook, but she did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor ten years you let me believe Thomas had lost his mind from guilt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou protected yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>We packed the remaining documents.<\/p>\n<p>The original bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Letters.<\/p>\n<p>Photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Both tapes.<\/p>\n<p>I photographed the inside of the box before moving anything else.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb would have done that.<\/p>\n<p>Preserve the record.<\/p>\n<p>Do not trust memory.<\/p>\n<p>As I zipped the bag, Samuel said, \u201cIf you go to state investigators, tell them to contact retired Detective Alan Price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came close to finding something back then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat stopped him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis supervisor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cMartin Vale\u2019s brother-in-law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another connection.<\/p>\n<p>Another person placed where questions could be buried.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the back door.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel called after me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the bag.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry about David.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the strap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sorry now because the truth survived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He absorbed that without argument.<\/p>\n<p>Then I left.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel came with me.<\/p>\n<p>We drove directly to my house because I wanted copies of everything before contacting anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway there, a dark SUV appeared in the rearview mirror.<\/p>\n<p>At first, I ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>Then it made the same three turns.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel noticed too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know that car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SUV stayed two vehicles behind.<\/p>\n<p>I changed lanes.<\/p>\n<p>It changed lanes.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel reached for her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShould I call police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We passed my street without turning.<\/p>\n<p>The SUV followed.<\/p>\n<p>I drove toward a busy shopping center.<\/p>\n<p>At the next traffic light, the SUV pulled closer.<\/p>\n<p>Its windshield reflected the sky.<\/p>\n<p>I could not see the driver clearly.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone rang through the car speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at the display.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man\u2019s voice spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>Professional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands tightened on the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Daniel Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>I looked in the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>The dark SUV remained behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you have something that belongs to my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=23952\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Daniel Vale Claimed He Wanted to Protect His Father\u2019s Reputation, Until Caleb\u2019s Final Investigation Exposed What Meridian Was Still Doing<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The basement door remained open for several seconds.
