the tape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had feared law enforcement because his own brother was involved.<\/p>\n<p>But Samuel had been retired for years.<\/p>\n<p>People changed.<\/p>\n<p>Departments changed.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t go local first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState police. Maybe the district attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the second tape?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had almost forgotten it.<\/p>\n<p>Tape 2: Nora.<\/p>\n<p>I inserted it.<\/p>\n<p>The recording began without static.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas sounded weaker.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told Nora where I put copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopies of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>He had sent his sister copies of bank records and something else.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph taken the night before the lake meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed Michael Rourke with the unidentified M.<\/p>\n<p>And Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>That was probably the burned photograph in the box.<\/p>\n<p>But Thomas said Nora had an unburned copy.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, she had a page David had given him.<\/p>\n<p>A page torn from David\u2019s notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The missing page.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room shift around me.<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s notebook was missing exactly one sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Somebody had searched Caleb\u2019s room for material related to it.<\/p>\n<p>Now we knew where a copy had gone.<\/p>\n<p>Nora.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps after Nora\u2019s death, Lena.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gave an address.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel grabbed a pen.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said something neither of us expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you find the page, don\u2019t trust the first name on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid used initials because he knew somebody might read the notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The missing page contained the full explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Relationships.<\/p>\n<p>And a place where evidence had been stored.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas believed Nora would understand how to retrieve it.<\/p>\n<p>The tape ended there.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel and I sat motionless.<\/p>\n<p>Then the doorbell rang upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Both of us froze.<\/p>\n<p>A second ring followed.<\/p>\n<p>Longer.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not expecting anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t answer it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bell rang again.<\/p>\n<p>Then someone knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Three hard strikes.<\/p>\n<p>A man\u2019s voice came faintly through the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face lost what little color remained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the open metal box.<\/p>\n<p>Documents covered the workbench.<\/p>\n<p>Cassette tapes.<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Bank records.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence Samuel might have spent years believing was gone.<\/p>\n<p>I moved quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut the important things in a bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep him upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t know I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The knocking came again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel, open the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed the cassette tapes, bank records, burnt photograph, and Thomas\u2019s letters.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel shoved them into a canvas grocery bag.<\/p>\n<p>I handed her David\u2019s notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pushed it back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat belongs to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A floorboard creaked overhead.<\/p>\n<p>Not near the door.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the house.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared upward.<\/p>\n<p>We both heard it.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was already upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Her front door had not opened.<\/p>\n<p>The sound came from the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Then another creak.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to the basement stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cThe back door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I switched off the basement light.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps crossed the floor above us.<\/p>\n<p>Slow.<\/p>\n<p>Deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>And then the basement door opened.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=23951\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Samuel Came Into Rachel\u2019s House Looking for Thomas\u2019s Papers, but His Version of the Lake Night Collapsed Almost Immediately<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel opened the front door before I reached the porch.
