disappeared.”

I stood.

“How much?”

“I never knew.”

“Who controlled it?”

“Thomas thought Michael did.”

My pulse quickened.

“And Samuel?”

Rachel became quiet.

“What about him?”

“Caleb told me Samuel worked for the sheriff’s department.”

“Yes.”

“Did Thomas trust his brother?”

The silence on the line deepened.

Finally Rachel said, “At first.”

“And later?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Thomas believed Samuel was helping Michael.”

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Helping him do what?”

“I don’t know.”

“That isn’t good enough anymore.”

“I swear to you, I don’t know everything.”

“Then tell me what you do know.”

Rachel breathed shakily.

“The night David died, Thomas called me from the motel.”

The same motel from the receipt.

“He was injured and terrified.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me not to go home.”

“Why?”

“He thought someone would be watching.”

“Who?”

“He wouldn’t say.”

I closed my eyes.

“What else?”

“He said David was dead.”

My throat tightened.

“And then?”

Rachel’s next words came quietly.

“He said David had died because he found proof that somebody was stealing money from sick children.”

I stopped breathing.

For years, David’s death had been reduced to rain, a curve in the road, and bad luck.

Caleb had spent his final months proving the story was larger.

Now, for the first time, I had a possible reason.

Money.

A frightened father.

A sick child.

A missing notebook page.

And at least one person connected to law enforcement.

I looked at the black notebook.

“Rachel, where is Thomas’s storage box?”

“At my house.”

“Has Samuel ever asked about it?”

She said nothing.

“Rachel.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Last week.”

A cold sensation spread through me.

“Before or after Caleb died?”

“After.”

“What exactly did Samuel say?”

“He asked whether Thomas had left any papers.”

I stared at the dark doorway beyond my kitchen.

“Did you tell him about the box?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

I closed Caleb’s laptop.

“Because tomorrow morning, we’re opening it.”

Rachel started to answer.

I interrupted.

“And until then, don’t tell Samuel, don’t tell anyone else, and do not leave that box where somebody can walk in and take it.”

I ended the call.

Then I sat alone in the kitchen with David’s notebook on one side and Caleb’s hidden recording on the other.

Father and son had each uncovered one piece of the same truth ten years apart.

David had died before he could reveal what he knew.

Caleb had died before he could finish what he started.

And now the one object that might connect their discoveries was sitting inside Rachel’s house.

A box belonging to the only man who had survived the lake and known exactly why my husband went back.

By sunrise, I had stopped wondering whether I should continue.

I was going to open Thomas Hart’s box.

And whatever my son had been searching for during the last months of his life, I was finally going to finish finding it.

<a
