Notes about my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd where is it now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked toward the bedside cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb gave it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anger surged through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took something belonging to David and gave it to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was afraid it might disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisappear how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily met my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause somebody had already searched his room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout two months before Caleb went back into the hospital, he came home and found things moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought you would panic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily opened the cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a small black notebook sealed in a clear plastic bag.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it instantly.<\/p>\n<p>David used to carry notebooks exactly like that in his jacket pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Emily placed it in my hands.<\/p>\n<p>The cover was worn.<\/p>\n<p>One corner had been softened by years of use.<\/p>\n<p>I opened to the first page.<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Initials.<\/p>\n<p>Dollar amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Telephone numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Then I found the final entries.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Hart.<\/p>\n<p>Lake Weston.<\/p>\n<p>Threats increasing.<\/p>\n<p>Move them tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Below those words, David had written another line.<\/p>\n<p>If T. is right, this is not about the debt anymore.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>The next sheet had been torn out.<\/p>\n<p>Not recently.<\/p>\n<p>Years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was on the missing page?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the torn edge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why was he so convinced this mattered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of what he found tucked inside the back cover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily reached into the cabinet again.<\/p>\n<p>She handed me a photocopy of a receipt.<\/p>\n<p>A motel receipt.<\/p>\n<p>Dated the morning after David died.<\/p>\n<p>The guest signature at the bottom belonged to Thomas Hart.<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>A man the police report had never mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>A man who survived the lake.<\/p>\n<p>A man who vanished immediately afterward.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the paper over.<\/p>\n<p>There was handwriting on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Not David\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Three words.<\/p>\n<p>He saw everything.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Emily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave me the answer that had apparently haunted Caleb during the final months of his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=23949\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Caleb Had Hidden One Final Recording, and the Voice Inside It Changed What I Believed About His Last Months<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The hospital smelled exactly like the place where Caleb had died.
