left.

In the elevator, my hands started shaking.

Harrison noticed.

“I thought you handled that well.”

“I’m going to Caroline’s house.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You think Julian invented it?”

“I think he gave you a real document for a reason.”

“Exactly.”

“And his reason may be to make you accuse someone before checking facts.”

I leaned against the elevator wall.

He was right.

I hated that he was right.

We went back to the house.

Mom was waiting.

Khloe too.

I showed them the copy.

Mom recognized the bank logo.

“I knew about that account.”

Every head turned.

“What?”

She frowned.

“Not the amount.”

“What was it?”

“Your father’s emergency fund.”

I stared.

“Eighty-seven thousand dollars?”

“He called everything over five hundred dollars an emergency fund.”

That sounded like Dad.

“Did he transfer it to Caroline?”

Mom went still.

“I don’t know.”

“Why would Julian say that?”

She looked confused.

“I don’t know.”

We called Caroline.

Not to accuse.

To ask.

She arrived twenty minutes later.

When she saw the statement, she sat down.

“Oh.”

That single syllable was enough.

“You know.”

“Yes.”

Mom looked at her.

“Caroline?”

Caroline folded her hands.

“David asked me not to tell you until he was gone.”

“He’s been gone eight years.”

“I know.”

“What happened?”

Caroline looked at me.

“Your father used that money to help someone.”

“Who?”

She did not answer.

Mom’s face changed.

“Caroline.”

“I promised him.”

“He’s dead.”

“So was the reason for the promise.”

I did not understand.

“Who did he help?”

Caroline looked toward Khloe.

Khloe whispered, “Me?”

“No.”

Then Caroline looked at Mom.

Martha understood before I did.

Her hand went to her mouth.

“My brother.”

I frowned.

“Uncle Frank?”

Mom had an older brother, Frank Ellis.

We had not seen him in nearly a decade.

Family history described him politely as unreliable.

Debt.

Gambling.

Broken promises.

Then disappearance.

Caroline nodded.

“David paid his debts.”

Mom stood.

“He told me Frank handled it himself.”

“He wanted you to believe Frank finally did something responsible.”

Mom laughed bitterly.

“He lied to me.”

“To protect you.”

“I hate when people say that.”

Caroline nodded.

“You should.”

That answer calmed Mom more than an excuse would have.

I looked at the statement.

“How much?”

“About sixty thousand went to creditors.”

“And the rest?”

“David set up a small account for Frank’s treatment.”

“Treatment?”

Mom sat back down.

Caroline looked at her.

“Gambling addiction.”

Mom stared at the table.

“He got treatment?”

“For a while.”

“Why didn’t he come home?”

“He was ashamed.”

That sounded possible.

Painfully possible.

“Is he alive?”

Caroline nodded.

Mom closed her eyes.

“He’s alive.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Oregon.”

Mom began crying.

Not because of money.

Because she had spent years believing her brother chose never to contact her.

“He wrote.”

Caroline’s voice broke.

“What?”

“He wrote you letters.”

Mom stared at her.

“Where are they?”

“David kept them.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Caroline looked miserable.

“Your father said he would give them to you when Frank was stable enough to come back.”

“But Dad died.”

“Yes.”

“And the letters disappeared.”

“Yes.”

We all understood what that meant.

Another unfinished plan.

Another paper trail.

Another missing piece.

Julian had apparently found the brokerage statement while searching Dad’s files.

Maybe he knew about Caroline because there were notes.

Maybe he did not know the full story.

It did not matter.

He had found another secret and assumed secrets were shameful because that was how he used them.

This one was different.

Complicated.

Questionable.

But not predatory.

Mom wiped her face.

“Why did David involve you?”

Caroline looked at her.

“Because I knew Frank.”

“How?”

“We dated before I met my husband.”

Mom stared at her.

“You what?”

Caroline laughed through tears.

“For three weeks.”

“You never told me.”

“It was embarrassing.”

Mom stared for another second.

Then she laughed.

A real laugh.

“You dated Frank?”

“Briefly.”

“He borrowed my car on first dates.”

“I know.”

The room shifted.

Not lighter exactly.

More human.

Dad had hidden something.

Not every hidden thing was exploitation.

That distinction mattered too.

Caroline offered to help locate Frank.

Mom said no at first.

Then yes.

Then no again.

Finally she said, “Give me his number.”

She held the slip of paper for nearly an hour before calling.

When Frank answered, Mom said nothing.

Neither did he.

Then she whispered, “You idiot.”

He began crying.

So did she.

I left the room.

Some reunions did not need witnesses.

Later, Mom told me only enough.

Frank had relapsed twice.

Recovered.

Moved.

Worked maintenance at a school district.

Never married.

Kept believing he had waited too long to return.

Dad had helped without telling anyone because Frank begged him.

Mom was angry at both of them.

And relieved.

Those emotions did not cancel one another.

The brokerage account had been legitimate.

Properly closed.

Most transfers documented.

Nothing criminal.

Julian’s supposed bombshell became another dead end for him.

Or so we thought.

Three days later, Harrison’s forensic accountant called.

“There’s a problem.”

“What?”

“The statement Julian gave us is genuine.”

“We come from old estate papers.”

“Where did it come from?”

“From a digital archive.”

“Whose?”

“We traced the document format.”

He paused.

“It appears to have been exported recently.”

“How recently?”

“Seven months ago.”

My stomach tightened.

Julian had not simply found an old piece of paper.

Someone had retrieved the financial record for him.

Someone with access to Dad’s archived estate files.

Harrison said, “Only a handful of people should have been able to do that.”

“Your firm?”

“Yes.”

“The had not entered the story through Evelyn by coincidence.

She had known Dad’s estate.

Known the trust.

Known the restrictions.

Known the accounts.

And if she had been helping Julian from the beginning, then he had not figured out our family’s vulnerabilities alone.

Someone who understood Dad’s protections had been teaching him
