Filing cabinets occupied one wall. A leather chair sat where my childhood bookshelf had been.<\/p>\n<p>I did not touch anything.<\/p>\n<p>I photographed the room.<\/p>\n<p>Then the master bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s old dresser was gone. Mom\u2019s quilt was folded inside a hallway cupboard. Photographs of Khloe and Julian covered the bedside tables.<\/p>\n<p>I photographed those too.<\/p>\n<p>On my way downstairs, I passed a framed picture from their anniversary party.<\/p>\n<p>Behind Julian and Khloe stood Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She was holding a serving tray.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at that photograph for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>At the hotel, I called Harrison Reed.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison had handled the purchase of the house and later helped me establish the family-care account for Mom. She doesn\u2019t own the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the edge of the hotel bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarrison, I think they\u2019re taking her money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still fund the family-care account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree thousand every month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you\u2019ve never reviewed the withdrawals?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trusted my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we start there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within an hour he had arranged for me to meet him at his office the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>I barely slept.<\/p>\n<p>At seven I called Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you have Mom\u2019s phone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left it downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut her on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt seven? Mom has been awake before six every day since Eisenhower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie, you\u2019re making everything suspicious because you arrived during one awkward evening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne awkward evening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom helps around the house. She likes being useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phrase made my skin crawl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive her the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll call later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hung up before anger could ruin the advantage I still had.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison\u2019s office occupied the seventeenth floor of a downtown building. He met me carrying coffee and a legal pad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat.<\/p>\n<p>He had already pulled the county records.<\/p>\n<p>The deed was clean.<\/p>\n<p>My name alone.<\/p>\n<p>Property taxes, insurance, construction payments\u2014everything led back to me.<\/p>\n<p>Then he opened another file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account is more complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow complicated?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother is the account holder. You\u2019re the funding party. We can request records because of the structure you established, but the bank may require her authorization for certain details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we see whether my transfers arrived?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned his monitor.<\/p>\n<p>There they were.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four recent deposits.<\/p>\n<p>Three thousand dollars each.<\/p>\n<p>Regular as a heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harrison scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>The balances following those deposits were almost nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat am I looking at?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney enters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd shortly afterward, money leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t confirm the destination yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I counted.<\/p>\n<p>Month after month.<\/p>\n<p>Three thousand in.<\/p>\n<p>Three thousand out.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this period?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He calculated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-two thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood and walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic moved far below.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-two thousand.<\/p>\n<p>That did not include the previous years. It did not include whatever Mom might have contributed herself. It did not explain why she was sleeping beside cleaning supplies or eating soup while Julian poured imported whiskey for guests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we stop it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can stop your future transfers immediately. For everything else, we need documentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want them out of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can be done, but we do it correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat depends on how they respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey think it\u2019s theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison\u2019s eyebrows lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKhloe called it \u2018our house.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes me more interested in what Julian has been telling people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing sounded uneven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie, can you come get me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was already reaching for my bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cAt the pharmacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison was on his feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We found her sitting on a bench outside the pharmacy with a paper bag in her lap.<\/p>\n<p>She had walked nearly a mile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s your car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the pavement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian uses it sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I crouched in front of her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you walk here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She held up the pharmacy bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy prescription.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison stayed several feet away, giving us privacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, I need the truth now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have my card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho does?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than a year?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another nod.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the world become very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you give it to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he would manage the household expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe changed the password.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came so softly I nearly missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they said you had enough problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat problems?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked genuinely confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour contracts. Your debts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have debts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I understood then.<\/p>\n<p>They had not merely taken control of her money.<\/p>\n<p>They had controlled what she believed about me.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison approached slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha, may I ask you something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Julian ever tell you Natalie had asked him to manage the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.
