But I knew that driveway. I knew every crack in the concrete because I had paid to have it poured. I knew my mother’s ten-year-old sedan, too. The black Mercedes parked beside it belonged to someone else.

I left my suitcase in the rental car and walked toward the front door with my carry-on over one shoulder. Music drifted through the house. Not Mom’s old country records. This was bass-heavy, expensive-speaker music, accompanied by bursts of laughter and the unmistakable clink of cocktail glasses.

I checked the number on the stone pillar even though I didn’t need to. This was the house I had bought and designed for Martha Brooks after years of promising her that one day she would stop worrying about rent, repairs, and whether the landlord would raise the price again.

I had not told her I was coming. That was supposed to be the surprise.

Instead, I was the one being surprised.

The front door opened before I reached the bell. A man in linen trousers and a pale blue shirt stood there holding a tumbler of amber liquor. For half a second I thought I had the wrong house after all.

Then I recognized Julian Carter, my younger sister Khloe’s husband.

“Natalie?”

He looked startled, but not pleased.

“Hello, Julian.”

His gaze dropped to my luggage, then returned to my face. Behind him, perhaps twenty people moved through the living room. Some stood around the kitchen island. Others were heading toward the patio carrying wine.

“What are you doing here?”

It was a strange question to hear while standing on property registered in my name.

“I came to see Mom.”

Julian’s expression changed so quickly I almost missed it. Surprise gave way to calculation, then to the polished smile I remembered from the wedding.

“Of course. Wow. Nobody told us you were coming.”

“That was intentional.”

He stepped into the doorway rather than stepping aside.

I looked past him. The living room had changed. The modest furniture Mom and I had chosen together was gone. A sectional the size of a small boat occupied half the room. There was an enormous television mounted above the fireplace and a glass cabinet filled with liquor where Mom’s bookcase used to stand.

“Where is she?”

Julian lifted his glass and gestured vaguely toward the rear of the property.

“The maid is out back.”

For a moment I thought I had misheard him.

“The what?”

“The maid.” He sounded impatient now, as if I had interrupted something important. “She’s cleaning the outdoor kitchen. If you need something, I can get her.”

My hand tightened around the strap of my bag.

Julian had met me several times. He knew exactly who I was. What he apparently did not understand was that the woman he had just called the maid was the reason this house existed—and that the woman standing on his porch owned every square foot beneath his shoes.

“I’ll find her myself.”

I walked past him.

“Natalie, wait.”

I kept going.

The kitchen smelled of roasted meat, perfume, citrus, and expensive wine. A woman I didn’t recognize gave me an absent smile before turning back to her conversation. Two men stood beside the refrigerator discussing golf. Nobody behaved like guests in my mother’s home. They behaved as though Julian had invited them to his.

I pushed open the patio door.

Heat rolled over me.

At first I saw the pool, then the long table covered with platters and bottles. Beyond it stood the outdoor kitchen Dad had once dreamed of having. I had added it when the house was built because Mom loved family cookouts.

Then I saw her.

My mother was kneeling beside the grill.

She wore faded gardening pants and an old gray shirt. Yellow rubber gloves covered her hands. A bucket sat beside her, filled with black water. She was scrubbing grease from the stone beneath the barbecue with a stiff brush.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

That frightened me more than anything else.

“Mom?”

The brush stopped.

She turned slowly.

For one extraordinary second her face became the face I knew—the woman who used to wait at the airport waving before I had even reached baggage claim.

Then something else crossed it.

Fear.

“Natalie?”

I dropped my bag.

She struggled to stand, and I reached her before she could straighten completely. Her knees trembled against my hands.

“What are you doing?”

She glanced toward the house.

“Nothing. Just helping.”

“Helping whom?”

“It’s Khloe and Julian’s dinner.”

I looked at the bucket.

“You’re on your knees scrubbing their grill.”

“It needed cleaning.”

“Where’s the service company?”

Her eyes shifted away.

That tiny movement told me more than an answer would have.

I took off one of her rubber gloves. Her fingers were red and swollen. The knuckles looked stiff.

“Mom, look at me.”

She tried to smile.

“You came all this way and the first thing you do is interrogate me?”

I didn’t smile back.

“Why did Julian call you the maid?”

Her face went still.

From inside came another burst of laughter.

Mom pulled her hand from mine and reached for the glove.

“He was joking.”

“No, he wasn’t.”

“Natalie.”

There was a warning in the way she said my name—not anger, but pleading.

I had heard that tone when I was twelve and Dad had lost his job. I heard it when she hid overdue bills under the telephone directory so Khloe and I wouldn’t worry.

It meant: Please don’t make this harder.

I picked up the bucket.

Mom grabbed the handle.

“Leave it.”

“So should you.”

“I’m almost finished.”

“You’re finished now.”

The patio door slid open.

Khloe came outside carrying a wineglass.

My sister had always been beautiful in an effortless way. Now the effort was visible everywhere: expensive dress, careful makeup, gold bracelet, manicured nails. She stopped when she saw me.

“Natalie?”

“Hi, Khloe.”

Her expression passed through the same sequence as Julian’s.

Shock.

Concern.

Calculation.

Then a smile.

“Oh my God. Why didn’t you tell us?”

I looked at Mom.

“I wanted to surprise her.”

Khloe set down her glass and hugged me. I let her.

“You should have called. We would’ve prepared.”

“For what?”

She pulled away.

“You know. When the house was designed, I had included a bedroom for myself because Mom insisted I would always need somewhere to come home to.

“What happened to my room?”

Khloe tucked hair behind her ear.

“Julian uses it as an office.”

Something cold settled in my stomach.

“And Mom’s room?”

Neither woman answered immediately.

That was when I knew the problem was larger than a dirty grill.

I turned to my mother.

“Show me where you sleep.”

“Natalie—”

“Please.”

Khloe’s voice sharpened.

“This is ridiculous. Mom is fine.”

I looked at her.

“I asked Mom.”

My mother slowly removed the second rubber glove.

Then she walked toward the house.

I followed.

Khloe followed us.

We passed the kitchen, crossed a hallway, and continued toward the rear wing. Mom did not turn toward the master bedroom designed for her. She stopped at a small room beside the garage.

It had originally been intended for storage.

There was a narrow bed against the wall.

A lamp.

A folding chair.

Two plastic drawers containing clothes.

Nothing else.

I stood in the doorway.

“Where is your bedroom furniture?”

Mom said nothing.

“Where’s Dad’s dresser?”

Khloe crossed her arms.

“We needed the master suite.”

I turned.

“You needed it?”

“Julian has back problems.
