Right now, I\u2019m talking about my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cAre you certain he is yours?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m only asking whether you\u2019ve confirmed anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you ask me that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and Clara were separated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter seven years of marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m being practical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A short laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>That silence told me more than another answer might have.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said, \u201cCall me when you\u2019re thinking clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hung up.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, Marcus sent a message to my personal number.<\/p>\n<p>Need more time. Do not contact anyone through company systems.<\/p>\n<p>I called him immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat irregularities?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still reconstructing them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara\u2019s number appears in archived configuration records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to verify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I tell you before I confirm it, you may confront someone. Hundreds of contractors, consultants, acquisitions, zoning arrangements, and financing entities moved through the project.<\/p>\n<p>A few manipulated vendors could hide extraordinary amounts of money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did you identify?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose to eleven million before I stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Julian\u2019s name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis approvals were everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just had surgery, Liam. I wasn\u2019t planning to sprint away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The joke lasted only until I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus did not bother with a greeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found the calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll six?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the doorway at Clara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey entered the corporate communications system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why didn\u2019t my phone ring?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Clara\u2019s number had a routing rule attached to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer calls were diverted before reaching your device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hallway seemed to narrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiverted where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn internal extension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going to like the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe extension was under Julian\u2019s administrative control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe voicemails?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found records of three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeleted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn administrator account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard Clara shifting inside the room.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe changes weren\u2019t random.
