searching?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause maybe someone believes Ray left something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That night police remained outside.<\/p>\n<p>Doug slept on my couch.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley and Maddie stayed upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>At 2:13 a.m., I woke to a noise beneath the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Metal scraping concrete.<\/p>\n<p>I sat upright.<\/p>\n<p>Another scrape.<\/p>\n<p>Basement.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could dial, Bentley appeared at the top of the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiss Arlene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was whispering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hear somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doug came awake.<\/p>\n<p>The basement door handle moved.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Someone on the other side was trying it.<\/p>\n<p>I called Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Then the handle stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Doug moved toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A thud sounded below.<\/p>\n<p>Then running.<\/p>\n<p>Police outside shouted.<\/p>\n<p>A door slammed somewhere beneath us.<\/p>\n<p>Within seconds officers flooded the yard.<\/p>\n<p>The underground corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had entered through it.<\/p>\n<p>Five minutes later Reynolds came upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then a radio crackled.<\/p>\n<p>Officer voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ve got one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart pounded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds listened.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Carl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doug exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>But the radio continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecond subject fled east through access tunnel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second subject.<\/p>\n<p>Not one intruder.<\/p>\n<p>Two.<\/p>\n<p>Harris rushed past us toward the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later he returned carrying an object wrapped in clear evidence plastic.<\/p>\n<p>A small old cassette tape.<\/p>\n<p>Dusty.<\/p>\n<p>Handwritten label.<\/p>\n<p>RAY &#8211; HAWTHORNE.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had removed it from a crack behind the basement wall.<\/p>\n<p>Carl had apparently found it seconds before police caught him.<\/p>\n<p>Ray had hidden one final piece of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>And somebody else had been willing to crawl beneath our home in the middle of the night to make sure we never
