There was a small white scar along his left eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmber here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t ask whether she lived here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked whether she was here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris\u2019s voice came through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnits are two minutes out. Get inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis noticed the phone.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou calling somebody?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised him.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough to make him leave.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped onto the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not here for trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes one of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the closed door, I heard movement.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley.<\/p>\n<p>I prayed he remembered what I had told him.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Stay away from windows.<\/p>\n<p>Keep Maddie quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Travis tilted his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every nerve in me tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His smile faded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I know Amber\u2019s kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He studied me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou Arlene?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe talked about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That bothered me more than it should have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLandlord next door. Old lady who watches everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer words, not mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not believe that.<\/p>\n<p>Amber had never spoken to me with anything but respect.<\/p>\n<p>Travis climbed another step.<\/p>\n<p>I raised my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I had frightened him.<\/p>\n<p>Because the word itself interested him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His gaze moved toward my empty hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHit me with your phone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice are coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey always are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His tone had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Something bitter underneath.<\/p>\n<p>Then, from inside my house, a floorboard creaked.<\/p>\n<p>Travis looked toward the front door.<\/p>\n<p>That was when Bentley shouted from upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo away!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything changed.<\/p>\n<p>Travis froze.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBentley!\u201d I shouted. \u201cStay upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the second-floor window.<\/p>\n<p>A slow smile spread across his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>I moved between him and the handle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet off my porch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLady, this has nothing to do with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou crossed that line nine days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, the confidence slipped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou talk to Amber?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That answer was enough.<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s awake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was not a question.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bentley shouted again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou pushed her!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis\u2019s head snapped upward.<\/p>\n<p>My blood went cold.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The thing Bentley had refused to tell me.<\/p>\n<p>He had seen more than Amber knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou little liar,\u201d Travis called.<\/p>\n<p>I raised the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarris heard that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then backed down one step.<\/p>\n<p>Sirens sounded in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>His head turned toward the corner.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly the charm vanished.<\/p>\n<p>He moved fast.<\/p>\n<p>Down the porch.<\/p>\n<p>Across the yard.<\/p>\n<p>Toward his truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravis Nolan!\u201d I shouted.<\/p>\n<p>He did not turn.<\/p>\n<p>The first police cruiser appeared as he reached the driver\u2019s door.<\/p>\n<p>He jumped inside.<\/p>\n<p>The truck roared.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Reynolds\u2019s cruiser blocked one end of the street.<\/p>\n<p>Another unit entered from the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p>Travis reversed violently.<\/p>\n<p>The back tire struck the curb.<\/p>\n<p>The truck lurched sideways.<\/p>\n<p>Maddie began screaming upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear Bentley trying to calm her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay there!\u201d I yelled.<\/p>\n<p>Travis threw the truck into drive.<\/p>\n<p>For one terrifying second I thought he intended to ram the cruiser.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he cut across Mrs. Talbot\u2019s lawn, flattened two decorative shrubs and jumped the curb onto the next block.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds accelerated after him.<\/p>\n<p>The second cruiser followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then the street went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Too quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I stood on the porch still holding the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Harris\u2019s voice came through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Whitaker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep them there until an officer returns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees began shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Not during the confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>After.<\/p>\n<p>Always after.<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the porch step.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later, Officer Reynolds returned alone.<\/p>\n<p>That told me enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe got away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have the vehicle description and plate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t have the plate already?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a partial from another report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat report?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>That hesitation mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat report?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Whitaker, I need to speak to Bentley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething Amber told investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the duplex.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe believes Travis may have been watching them before the assault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already figured that much out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmber reported a break-in two months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no sign of forced entry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was taken?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did she report it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause someone moved things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A picture frame.<\/p>\n<p>A kitchen chair.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley\u2019s backpack.<\/p>\n<p>Small things.<\/p>\n<p>Things designed to make Amber question herself.<\/p>\n<p>My anger returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid police believe her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took a report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds\u2019s silence answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Travis have a key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how did he get inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know that he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Amber\u2019s front door.<\/p>\n<p>Doug had changed the deadbolt the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Only Amber and I had spare keys.<\/p>\n<p>Or so I thought.<\/p>\n<p>I went inside.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley came downstairs carrying Maddie.<\/p>\n<p>His face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said stay upstairs,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouted at him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was gonna come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He set Maddie on the couch.<\/p>\n<p>She clung to his sweatshirt.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds crouched nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBentley, can I ask you something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me first.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see Travis hurt your mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley\u2019s throat moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds pulled out his notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley sat beside Maddie.<\/p>\n<p>His hands disappeared beneath his thighs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came in after breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your mom let him in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it locked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley whispered, \u201cKey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds asked, \u201cDid Travis say anything when he came inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley squeezed his knees together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Mom couldn&#39;t hide forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maddie began humming to herself.<\/p>\n<p>A nervous little sound.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey went in the kitchen. Mom told me to take Maddie to my room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard yelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravis grabbed her arm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hit him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A small spark of pride entered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hit him really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened next?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe pushed her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she fall?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hit the tub.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe couldn&#39;t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Travis do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe looked at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That single sentence carried more terror than anything else he had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if I called anybody, he&#39;d come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had to turn away.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds stayed calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he threaten Maddie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said people disappear when families don&#39;t mind their business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands curled into fists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long before you called 911?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you wait?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBentley, you did the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were ten years old and someone threatened you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley blinked.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the officer left, Bentley became very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I made tea for myself and hot chocolate for him.<\/p>\n<p>He did not touch it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the mug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom said not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore the ambulance came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was trying to protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo were you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he gonna come back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to say no.<\/p>\n<p>I had promised myself not to lie to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley nodded as if he had expected that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut,\u201d I added, \u201cnow people know who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always comes back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The certainty in his voice unsettled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was here before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your mother know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;d park far away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow far?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the old church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s three blocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe watched us walk home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out the chair opposite him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long has this been happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley counted silently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince before school started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he ever talk to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Once.<\/p>\n<p>At the playground.<\/p>\n<p>Travis had approached him near the swings.<\/p>\n<p>He had asked whether Amber still worked evenings.<\/p>\n<p>Whether Maddie went to daycare.<\/p>\n<p>Whether they still lived beside the \u201cold landlord woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin crawled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That night I checked every window twice.<\/p>\n<p>Doug installed a second lock on my back door.<\/p>\n<p>Police cruisers passed every hour.<\/p>\n<p>At eleven, Bentley finally slept.<\/p>\n<p>I sat in the kitchen beneath the yellow light above the stove.<\/p>\n<p>There was one detail I could not stop thinking about.<\/p>\n<p>A key.<\/p>\n<p>Travis had entered Amber\u2019s locked apartment with a key.<\/p>\n<p>Amber had never given him one.<\/p>\n<p>I had the only spare.<\/p>\n<p>Or I thought I did.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the drawer where I kept duplicate keys.<\/p>\n<p>Mine were labeled with masking tape.<\/p>\n<p>GARAGE.<\/p>\n<p>SHED.<\/p>\n<p>DOUG.<\/p>\n<p>COLLINS UNIT.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the last one.<\/p>\n<p>Then picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>The brass was bright.<\/p>\n<p>Too bright.<\/p>\n<p>Newer than I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>I turned it over.<\/p>\n<p>There were tiny fresh grooves along the teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had copied it.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly the question was not
