Maybe overnight. I thought I&#39;d call somebody as soon as they stabilized me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead her condition deteriorated.<\/p>\n<p>The respiratory infection was pneumonia.<\/p>\n<p>Combined with her injuries, it became life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p>She was transferred to Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency surgery followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then days on a ventilator.<\/p>\n<p>For most of those nine days, Amber had been unable to tell anyone that two children were waiting at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI woke up properly today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her words came slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing I asked about was Bentley and Maddie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t the hospital know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything happened too fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began coughing.<\/p>\n<p>A second voice came onto the telephone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Whitaker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Denise. I&#39;m one of Amber&#39;s nurses. She gave us permission to speak with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief nearly made my knees weak.<\/p>\n<p>Denise confirmed enough to remove any remaining doubt.<\/p>\n<p>Amber was hospitalized.<\/p>\n<p>She had been critically ill.<\/p>\n<p>She had undergone surgery.<\/p>\n<p>She had only recently become fully alert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did she get my number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Amber answered faintly in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYellow note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Months earlier, she had borrowed my vacuum while I was visiting Doug.<\/p>\n<p>I had written my landline number on a yellow sticky note and put it inside the kitchen cabinet above her microwave.<\/p>\n<p>Through injury, surgery, medication and nine days of fear, she had remembered that scrap of paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen can she come home?\u201d I asked Denise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral days at least. Her doctors will decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the wall separating our homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell her not to worry about the children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amber came back onto the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiss Arlene\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou listen now. Bentley has been making adult decisions for nine days. You have been fighting to stay alive. Both of you are finished doing this alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know how to thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was all I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet well enough to come home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before hanging up, Amber repeated one warning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravis knows the duplex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he drive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked, \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he drive, Amber?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn old black Ford.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything distinctive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe front passenger hubcap is missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood and walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>The street was empty.<\/p>\n<p>But three days earlier it had not been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s already been here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amber stopped breathing for a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw that truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmber\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows where I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;ll come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the dark glass toward her front porch.<\/p>\n<p>This time I believed her.<\/p>\n<p>After we ended the call, I did not sleep.<\/p>\n<p>At dawn, Bentley appeared in my kitchen wearing his backpack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBus comes soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re not doing that today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo pretending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders slowly dropped.<\/p>\n<p>I poured him orange juice.<\/p>\n<p>Then I told him the one thing he had been afraid to ask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother is alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The backpack slid from his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou talked to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike actually talked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually talked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>No sound came out.<\/p>\n<p>Then he crossed the kitchen in two steps and wrapped both arms around me.<\/p>\n<p>At first he did not cry.<\/p>\n<p>His body simply shook.<\/p>\n<p>Then the words came against my sweater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held the back of his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought if I told anybody, they&#39;d take Maddie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept her safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI missed school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll deal with school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took crackers from your pantry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed through my tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll deal with the great cracker robbery too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled away enough to look at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I talk to Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as the nurse says she&#39;s strong enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face collapsed again.<\/p>\n<p>This time I let him cry until there was nothing left to hide.<\/p>\n<p>Later that morning, I took him to school myself.<\/p>\n<p>Principal Ellison met us near the office.<\/p>\n<p>She did not interrogate Bentley.<\/p>\n<p>She did not demand explanations in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>She crouched until they were eye level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe missed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley nodded.<\/p>\n<p>His teacher, Mrs. Alvarez, appeared carrying several books.<\/p>\n<p>One was Charlotte\u2019s Web.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe this belongs with you a little longer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that morning, Bentley smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Watching him walk toward his classroom was like watching someone return to the age he had been forced to abandon.<\/p>\n<p>I took Maddie home.<\/p>\n<p>By noon, a police cruiser pulled into the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Reynolds approached with another detective.<\/p>\n<p>Indianapolis authorities had contacted them after speaking with Amber.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, my living room had become an interview room.<\/p>\n<p>I explained everything.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley\u2019s morning bathroom visits.<\/p>\n<p>The water bottle.<\/p>\n<p>The empty refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>The fake school routine.<\/p>\n<p>The nine days.<\/p>\n<p>The black pickup.<\/p>\n<p>At that detail, Detective Harris looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescribe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlder Ford. Black. Missing a front hubcap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exchanged a glance with Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose to an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDriver get out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that I saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris wrote something down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Whitaker, if you see that vehicle again, don&#39;t approach it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t planning to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall me immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave me his card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravis Nolan may try to contact Amber or determine whether the children are here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Maddie, who was coloring circles at my coffee table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe comes near those children, you&#39;ll know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris studied me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;d prefer you call before doing anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo would I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That evening Doug arrived carrying grocery bags.<\/p>\n<p>He set them on my counter without ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Milk.<\/p>\n<p>Fruit.<\/p>\n<p>Chicken.<\/p>\n<p>Bread.<\/p>\n<p>Diapers.<\/p>\n<p>Juice boxes.<\/p>\n<p>He kept unloading until there was no room left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI canceled the eviction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I continued washing carrots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWater&#39;s back on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI covered the balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney is easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want me to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Amber?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Bentley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doug looked toward the living room.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley sat on the floor building a tower with Maddie.<\/p>\n<p>My son swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following afternoon he returned with a toolbox.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley stopped when he saw him.<\/p>\n<p>Doug knelt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI owe you an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made decisions about your home without finding out who those decisions would hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still silence.<\/p>\n<p>Doug opened the toolbox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour kitchen cabinet door is loose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt falls off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I&#39;ve heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doug handed him a flashlight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know anything about supervising repairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A cautious smile appeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the next hour they worked together.<\/p>\n<p>Doug tightened cabinet hinges, replaced a cracked outlet cover and repaired the towel rack.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley held screws.<\/p>\n<p>Measured things.<\/p>\n<p>Asked questions.<\/p>\n<p>Doug answered every one.<\/p>\n<p>When they finished, Bentley said, \u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doug shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saturday morning almost felt peaceful.<\/p>\n<p>Maddie chased bubbles across the yard.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley helped me pull weeds from Ray\u2019s neglected tomato bed.<\/p>\n<p>Doug had gone to the hardware store for a replacement faucet.<\/p>\n<p>Amber was recovering.<\/p>\n<p>The children were fed.<\/p>\n<p>The police knew about Travis.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in days, I allowed myself to believe the worst might be behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Then every dog on Kilgore Avenue started barking.<\/p>\n<p>I straightened.<\/p>\n<p>A black pickup rolled slowly past the duplex.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>The front passenger wheel was missing its hubcap.<\/p>\n<p>The truck reached the corner.<\/p>\n<p>Turned.<\/p>\n<p>Came back.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley saw my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiss Arlene?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet Maddie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not ask why.<\/p>\n<p>The truck stopped across the street.<\/p>\n<p>Its engine remained running.<\/p>\n<p>No one got out.<\/p>\n<p>I guided the children behind the maple tree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake Maddie into my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley looked toward the truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I did.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least every instinct I possessed did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLock the door. Go upstairs. Don&#39;t open it for anyone except me or a police officer I tell you is there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bentley lifted Maddie.<\/p>\n<p>This time he obeyed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I took Detective Harris&#39;s card from my pocket and called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truck is here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack Ford?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMissing hubcap?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo inside now.
