Daniel stood between Thomas and the hallway. Thomas himself seemed to be calculating something, his eyes moving from Emily to the officers and finally toward the locked door.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel broke the silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Sophie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gave a small shrug. \u201cAn imaginary friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s reaction was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is not!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice cracked through the room with enough force to surprise everyone, including herself.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s head snapped toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>Mary moved closer, allowing Emily to lean against her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was real,\u201d Emily whispered. \u201cShe lived here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary rubbed one hand slowly across the child\u2019s back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Mommy went away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel and Mary exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>Until that moment, Emily\u2019s missing mother had been troubling background information. Now her disappearance seemed connected to a child Thomas insisted had never existed.<\/p>\n<p>Mary asked, \u201cWhere is your mother now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas answered from across the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left us three years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily lifted her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, she didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child pointed toward the basement door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy said Mommy sleeps downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel felt the room change.<\/p>\n<p>He had spent years learning not to let surprise show on his face. This time it took effort.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel blocked him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, we\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter is confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you can explain what she means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have to explain anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel reached for his radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDispatch, Unit Twenty-Four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStart a supervisor, Child Protective Services and a detective to our location. Send another patrol unit as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s response came without hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopy, Twenty-Four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gave a short, humorless laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou people are turning a child\u2019s imagination into a crime scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve interviewed scared children before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what confusion looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily buried her face against Mary.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas folded his arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been here ten minutes. You think that qualifies you to judge my family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Mary said. \u201cYour daughter\u2019s behavior qualifies us to keep asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second patrol car arrived within minutes, followed by Sergeant Linda Brooks. Officer Jenkins entered first, while another officer remained outside. Brooks took in the room quickly: frightened child, angry father, locked basement, two officers whose posture told her the call had escalated.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel gave her the essential facts in a low voice.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks looked at Emily\u2019s bruises.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the red mark around her wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the deadbolt.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want all of you out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t happening yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have a warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re correct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a child reporting that she has been hurt. We have injuries requiring explanation, statements about another child, and concerning information about an absent parent. We\u2019re going to secure the situation while we determine the appropriate next step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re violating my rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll document every action we take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer seemed to anger him more than confrontation would have.<\/p>\n<p>Mary remained with Emily while Brooks asked Daniel to photograph the visible injuries. They did so without forcing Emily to move more than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas watched every photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Emily watched Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel noticed that distinction.<\/p>\n<p>She was not afraid of the camera.<\/p>\n<p>She was afraid of what her father would do because the camera existed.<\/p>\n<p>Mary showed Emily the dusty rabbit again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said this belonged to Sophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Sophie about your age?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow little?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily held her hand near her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas scoffed.<\/p>\n<p>Mary ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Sophie sleep upstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did she sleep other times?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s eyes went to the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Mary waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the other ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat other ones?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas took a step backward.<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared at the carpet as if she wished she could disappear into it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not supposed to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary said, \u201cHow did you find out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeard who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas moved again.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shifted with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat, I can\u2019t walk around my own house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot toward that door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re being ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet his breathing had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Faster.<\/p>\n<p>Shallower.<\/p>\n<p>Sergeant Brooks noticed.<\/p>\n<p>So did Jenkins.<\/p>\n<p>Mary asked Emily, \u201cWhen did you last hear another child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily frowned as though trying to sort days that had blurred together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s head turned.<\/p>\n<p>Mary kept her voice gentle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you hear?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom downstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it Sophie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know who it was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stepped backward again.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHands where I can see them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second, he complied.<\/p>\n<p>Then he ran.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward the front entrance, which stood only a few yards away.<\/p>\n<p>He sprinted for the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel caught him before he reached the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Both men slammed into a narrow table. A framed family photograph dropped and shattered across the hardwood.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas fought with astonishing desperation.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins rushed forward.<\/p>\n<p>Together the officers forced him down, avoiding the broken glass as best they could.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas twisted beneath them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet off me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pulled one arm behind his back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop resisting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t go down there!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel paused for half a heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas realized what he had said.<\/p>\n<p>Too late.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins secured the second cuff.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas strained against them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas turned his head toward the basement door.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had seen suspects look toward exits, weapons, accomplices, hidden drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at that door as though his entire life were sealed behind it.<\/p>\n<p>Mary guided Emily away from the struggle.<\/p>\n<p>The child clung to her sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t wake him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at the basement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary\u2019s stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there a man living down there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know his real name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does your father call him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe tells me to go upstairs when he comes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow often does he come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas shouted from the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop questioning her!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily jumped.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel tightened his grip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared at him with naked fury.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks instructed one officer to take Thomas into the living room and keep him secured while she requested a search warrant and emergency child-protection response.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, the locked basement would remain untouched until legal authority was clear.<\/p>\n<p>Then Jenkins saw the liquid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSergeant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks followed his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>Something dark had begun appearing beneath the basement door.<\/p>\n<p>A thin line at first.<\/p>\n<p>Then another drop.<\/p>\n<p>Mary pulled on gloves and crouched near it.<\/p>\n<p>The liquid had a reddish-brown cast under the hallway light.<\/p>\n<p>She touched the edge carefully with one gloved fingertip and looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to make entry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks did not hesitate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas heard her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice filled the house.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel moved to the basement door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lost it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the heavy deadbolt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou installed this and lost the key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared back.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks nodded toward Jenkins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring the breaching tool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily covered her ears before the first strike.<\/p>\n<p>The steel tool hit the frame with a heavy crack.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas began struggling again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second strike.<\/p>\n<p>Wood splintered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Third.<\/p>\n<p>The frame bent.<\/p>\n<p>Mary stayed beside Emily, speaking softly enough that the child had to concentrate to hear her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re safe right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one\u2019s safe when he opens it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked toward Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fourth strike cracked the deadbolt housing.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth tore it free.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>Cold, stale air climbed the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>The smell was damp at first\u2014concrete, mildew, old wood.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel caught another odor.<\/p>\n<p>Metallic.<\/p>\n<p>He switched on his flashlight.<\/p>\n<p>A narrow staircase descended into darkness.<\/p>\n<p>Marks covered the concrete wall beside it.<\/p>\n<p>Some were random scratches.<\/p>\n<p>Others looked deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>Mary approached behind him and aimed her flashlight lower.<\/p>\n<p>Blue crayon appeared beneath a layer of grime.<\/p>\n<p>Words had been written in uneven letters.<\/p>\n<p>A plea for help.<\/p>\n<p>Below it, another message asked for a mother.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of small handprints surrounded the writing.<\/p>\n<p>Some had faded almost completely.<\/p>\n<p>Others looked far newer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel descended.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom were shelves, paint cans, broken furniture and cardboard boxes. For several feet, the basement could almost have passed for the storage area Thomas claimed it was.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel\u2019s flashlight reached a small pink bicycle.<\/p>\n<p>Dust covered its seat.<\/p>\n<p>Three children\u2019s shoes lay nearby.<\/p>\n<p>None formed a matching pair.<\/p>\n<p>Mary picked up one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is much smaller than Emily\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>His beam moved farther across the room.<\/p>\n<p>It stopped on another door.<\/p>\n<p>This one was built into the rear basement wall.<\/p>\n<p>Steel reinforced its frame.<\/p>\n<p>Scratches surrounded the inside edge of the handle, deep enough to expose pale wood beneath old paint.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins came down behind them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the hell happened here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone listened.<\/p>\n<p>The furnace hummed.<\/p>\n<p>Water moved somewhere inside a pipe.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>Then came a sound from behind the reinforced door.<\/p>\n<p>Tap.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s flashlight stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>Mary stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Another tap followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third.<\/p>\n<p>Three slow knocks from the other side of the locked door.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=23608\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Three Knocks Behind the Reinforced Door Revealed a Living Child, but Her Rescue Exposed a Much Older Secret<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No one in the living room spoke for several seconds after Emily said Sophie had been in the basement.
