Shoes by a doorway, dishes beside a sink, crayons beneath a table\u2014those were signs that people actually lived somewhere. Thomas Miller\u2019s house looked arranged for inspection.<\/p>\n<p>The couch cushions sat at identical angles. Magazines formed a neat stack on the coffee table. Family photographs were positioned along the mantel with deliberate symmetry. The air smelled faintly of lemon cleaner.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stood between the officers and the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel noticed that immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Davis noticed something else.<\/p>\n<p>There were pictures of Thomas and Emily everywhere, yet almost none showed a woman who could have been Emily\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir,\u201d Daniel said, \u201cwe\u2019re not accusing you of anything. We received a 911 call from this residence, so we need to confirm that everyone is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gave him a tight smile. \u201cAnd I told you everyone is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary glanced toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily?\u201d she called.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A small voice answered from above.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m awake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas closed his eyes for half a second.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Emily stood near the top of the staircase in pale blue pajamas. She held a stuffed rabbit against her chest with both arms. Her dark hair fell across one cheek, and her bare feet were turned slightly inward.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing about her posture resembled a child curious about visitors.<\/p>\n<p>She looked prepared to run.<\/p>\n<p>Mary softened her voice. \u201cHi, Emily. I\u2019m Officer Davis. This is Officer Harris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s eyes flicked toward Thomas before returning to Mary.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing out of bed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child shrank against the railing.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped slightly to the side, deliberately placing himself where Thomas could see him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked for her, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked back at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, neither man moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas forced another smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily descended slowly.<\/p>\n<p>At the sixth step, she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Mary saw the bruise first.<\/p>\n<p>It showed above the collar of Emily\u2019s pajama top, faint but unmistakable along one side of her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily,\u201d Mary said, \u201cwould you come sit with me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas interrupted. \u201cShe fell off her bicycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Mary had not asked about the bruise.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it hurt?\u201d Mary asked.<\/p>\n<p>Emily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gave a weary laugh. \u201cKids get bruises. Surely you know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere else are you hurt, Emily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl\u2019s fingers tightened around the rabbit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid somebody tell you to say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel moved at once, blocking him without touching him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re speaking to your daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s face flushed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou show up here in the middle of the evening because of some accidental phone call and start interrogating an eight-year-old?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t accidental,\u201d Emily whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>She immediately lowered her head.<\/p>\n<p>Mary saw the change.<\/p>\n<p>So did Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas spoke quietly. \u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s lips moved, but no sound came.<\/p>\n<p>Mary crossed the room and crouched several feet from the child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called 911?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl glanced toward her father.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas folded his arms.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cMr. Miller, I\u2019m going to ask you to give us some space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m her father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd right now your presence is making it difficult for her to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s your interpretation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then he moved toward the kitchen but remained where he could see them.<\/p>\n<p>Mary waited until Emily looked at her again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell Claire something was hurting you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou talked to Claire?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s still working tonight. She asked us to come make sure you\u2019re all right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI shouldn\u2019t have called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy says you only call police when strangers are bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary kept her expression neutral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes people call us when someone they know is hurting them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas laughed from the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is absurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Mary saw it clearly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, where is the snake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stopped laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat snake?\u201d Thomas asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mary did not turn around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one Emily mentioned during the emergency call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas answered quickly. \u201cShe has nightmares. She watches nature programs. Last week she was convinced there were spiders in the air vents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Mary leaned slightly closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there a real snake in the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily whispered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas exhaled loudly, as though the matter had been settled.<\/p>\n<p>Mary continued. \u201cThen what does \u2018snake\u2019 mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you promised?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A tear slipped down her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid someone say something bad would happen if you told?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily pressed the rabbit against her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Mary waited.<\/p>\n<p>Finally the child whispered, \u201cPeople disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas came out of the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel intercepted him again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re frightening her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Mary said without looking away from Emily. \u201cSomething frightened her before we arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas pointed toward the front door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s expression remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not leaving yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s jaw worked.<\/p>\n<p>Mary gently asked Emily, \u201cWho disappears?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child looked toward a hallway leading away from the living room.<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze stopped on a closed door.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel followed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The door was narrower than the others and painted the same cream color as the wall. A heavy deadbolt had been installed above the ordinary handle.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had been inside hundreds of houses.<\/p>\n<p>He had rarely seen an interior basement door secured that way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere does that go?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s downstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStorage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy the deadbolt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep tools there. Chemicals. Things I don\u2019t want a child touching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reasonable words.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Thomas\u2019s voice had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel approached the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stepped in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have permission to search my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say I was searching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re walking toward a locked room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking at a door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s shoulders stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>Behind them, Mary noticed Emily watching the exchange with growing panic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily,\u201d she said quietly, \u201cis there something downstairs you think we need to know about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child shook her head too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas spoke over her. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary looked at Emily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there anyone downstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again the child shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cNot now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>But Daniel saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Emily began rubbing the rabbit\u2019s worn ear between her fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas took a breath. \u201cShe\u2019s tired. This conversation is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary noticed another mark when Emily lifted her arm.<\/p>\n<p>A narrow reddish line circled part of her wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Not a bicycle injury.<\/p>\n<p>Mary pointed gently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily immediately covered it.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said, \u201cShe catches herself on things constantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou answer a lot of questions that weren\u2019t directed to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m her father. I know what happens to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily whispered, \u201cNot everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>The room became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s chin trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas moved toward her.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Thomas dropped the friendly-neighbor performance completely.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes went flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she\u2019s afraid of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s nostrils flared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From somewhere in the house came a faint sound.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone stopped.<\/p>\n<p>A dull impact.<\/p>\n<p>Then silence.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward the basement door.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas did not.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Emily.<\/p>\n<p>That was more revealing.<\/p>\n<p>Mary stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurnace,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel listened.<\/p>\n<p>The house remained still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounded like something hit a wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an old system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another sound came.<\/p>\n<p>Softer.<\/p>\n<p>A scrape.<\/p>\n<p>Emily covered her ears.<\/p>\n<p>Mary approached her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl squeezed her eyes shut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scratching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas spoke sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no scratching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s face lost color.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel moved toward the basement door.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stepped into his path again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not opening that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stopped a foot away from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me what\u2019s behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStorage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes your storage scratch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>The noise did not come again.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, Daniel wondered whether he had misheard it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mary noticed something beside the basement door.<\/p>\n<p>A stuffed animal.<\/p>\n<p>Another rabbit, smaller than Emily\u2019s, half-hidden beneath a narrow console table.<\/p>\n<p>Dust covered one side of it.<\/p>\n<p>Mary picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>Emily saw the toy.<\/p>\n<p>The color drained from her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know this bunny?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily backed away.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said, \u201cIt\u2019s hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily,\u201d Thomas warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary held the dusty rabbit gently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at her father.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the locked basement door.<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing became shallow.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said, \u201cShe has dozens of stuffed animals. She doesn\u2019t remember half of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily shook her head harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas took a step forward.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel caught his arm.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas jerked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t touch me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stay where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Mary lowered herself to the child\u2019s height.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you remembering?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared at the dusty rabbit.<\/p>\n<p>Her answer barely carried across the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary\u2019s skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Sophie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked toward the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas spoke before she could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s eyes snapped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas went still.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel watched him carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Mary asked the next question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Sophie now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s mouth trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you last see her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child looked at the deadbolt.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cDown there.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=23607\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Emily\u2019s Story About Sophie Forced Thomas to Drop His Mask, and His First Instinct Was to Reach the Basement<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Harris had learned to distrust perfect living rooms.
