through.”

My stomach dropped.

“That wasn’t the question.”

He looked at the floor.

“Four.”

Silence.

“In my name?” I asked.

“Two.”

“Lauren’s?”

“One.”

“And the fourth?”

Eric looked toward Dad.

Dad’s face changed.

“No.”

Lauren whispered, “Whose?”

Eric remained silent.

Dad stepped forward.

“Whose name?”

Eric’s jaw tightened.

Then he said it.

“Mom’s.”

I felt sick.

Dad stared at him.

“What did you open?”

“Credit card.”

“How much?”

“Twelve thousand.”

Dad grabbed the back of a chair as if he needed it for balance.

Mom’s credit had already been weak.

A fraudulent account could devastate her.

“You told me you were fixing things,” Dad said.

“I was.”

“You told me Rachel’s loan would cover everything.”

“I thought it would.”

The sentence revealed more than Eric intended.

There had never been a stable plan.

Only one hidden debt feeding another.

I looked at the folders again.

Four family members reduced to available credit.

Accounts.

Capacity.

Collateral.

Eric had not simply made a terrible financial decision.

He had turned the family into a financing structure.

Then Lauren noticed something on the floor.

A small envelope had slipped from one folder.

She picked it up.

“What’s this?”

Eric moved quickly.

“Give me that.”

Lauren stepped back.

His urgency made all of us look at the envelope.

She opened it.

Inside were printed screenshots from a bank account.

Not Eric’s.

Not Dad’s.

The account holder was Margaret Whitman.

Our mother.

Lauren flipped through the pages.

Then stopped.

“What is this transfer?”

Dad took the page.

His expression changed.

“What?”

I stepped beside him.

A wire transfer for thirty-five thousand dollars had left Mom’s account six months earlier.

Destination:

Whitman Strategic Logistics.

Dad looked at Eric.

“You said her savings were gone because of medical expenses.”

Eric did not answer.

Dad’s voice rose.

“You told me your mother used that money for medical bills.”

“I needed capital.”

Dad stared at him.

“That was everything she had.”

Eric finally snapped.

“You think I don’t know that?”

His voice filled the room.

“I was trying to keep all of us from drowning.”

“No,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

“You were choosing who got to drown first.”

Eric’s eyes hardened.

For a moment the brother I knew disappeared completely.

Then my phone buzzed.

Natalie.

Are you safe?

I looked around the room.

At Lauren beside the open desk.

At Dad holding proof that his son had taken Mom’s savings.

At Eric standing between us and the hallway.

I typed back.

For now.

Then I looked at Eric.

“Where is Mom?”

Dad answered.

“At our house.”

“With Emma.”

Lauren’s face changed instantly.

“I’m getting my daughter.”

She moved toward the door.

Eric stepped in front of her.

“We need to finish this first.”

Lauren stopped.

“Move.”

“Lauren.”

“Move away from the door.”

He hesitated.

That hesitation was all I needed.

I took out my phone.

“If you stop her leaving, I call the police now.”

Eric looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then he stepped aside.

Lauren walked past him.

Dad followed.

I was last.

At the bottom of the stairs, I looked back once at the office.

Open drawers.

Scattered documents.

Folders bearing our names.

The secret system Eric had built was no longer secret.

And whatever happened next, none of us could return to pretending this was merely a mortgage problem.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: My Mother Finally Told Me Why She Protected Eric, but Her
