Some callers shouted until their words tangled together. Others became unnaturally calm. A few could barely breathe. But the small voice that reached her headset that Tuesday evening was different. The child whispered so softly that Claire initially wondered whether the call had connected by accident.

“Emergency services. What’s happening?”

Nothing came back except faint breathing.

Claire straightened in her chair. Around her, the Springfield communications center carried on with its usual controlled noise—keyboards clicking, radios crackling, another dispatcher confirming an address two desks away.

“Hello? Can you hear me?”

A tiny voice finally answered.

“Yes.”

Claire glanced at the incoming number and the location information appearing on her monitor. Residential landline. Maplewood Drive.

“All right. I can hear you. My name is Claire. What’s your name?”

There was another pause.

“Emily.”

The girl sounded young. They lacked the vocabulary adults relied on. A frightening sound could become a monster. A seizure could become shaking. Blood might simply be “red stuff.” Claire had learned never to dismiss the words themselves simply because they did not make immediate sense.

“Can you tell me how old you are?”

“Eight.”

“All right, Emily. She deliberately kept the radio description concise. There were too many unknowns, and she did not want speculation replacing facts.

Unit Twenty-Four acknowledged.

Officers Daniel Harris and Mary Davis were less than four miles away.

Claire sent an additional note directly to their vehicle terminal.

Eight-year-old female caller. Trimmed lawns. Basketball hoops above garages. Recycling bins waiting beside curbs. Porch lights beginning to glow in the fading evening.

Number 1427 was a two-story house with pale siding and dark shutters.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

No broken windows.

No screaming.

No one running outside.

Daniel parked along the curb instead of blocking the driveway.

Mary studied the house.

“Curtain moved upstairs.”

Daniel saw it too.

A small shape disappeared from the second-floor window.

They approached the front door together.

Before Daniel could knock twice, it opened.

Thomas Miller stood there wearing jeans and a gray pullover, his expression caught somewhere between irritation and practiced concern.

“Officers?”

Daniel introduced himself.

Thomas glanced past them toward the patrol car.

“Is something wrong?”

“We received a call from this address.”

Thomas’s face barely changed.

“A call?”

“A child contacted emergency services.”

A brief pause.

Then Thomas laughed.

Not loudly.

Just enough to suggest the entire situation was embarrassing rather than alarming.

“My daughter has been playing with the phone lately.
