Messages. The timing of the transfer. Statements connected to the property."

"She gave them the house."

"That will certainly be our argument."

"Our argument?"

Richard leaned forward.

"It's the truth."

"Truth and legal simplicity aren't identical."

Richard's expression hardened.

"What are you recommending?"

"At minimum, you should consider negotiation."

"No."

"Richard."

"I don't negotiate with people who throw tantrums."

His attorney closed the file.

"Then you may pay considerably more to discover whether a judge shares your description."

Richard's jaw tightened.

That evening he called Daniel.

"Come over."

Daniel nearly refused.

Then he reconsidered.

He wanted one answer.

Richard received him in a dining room large enough to seat fourteen people. Crystal glasses stood inside illuminated cabinets. The table was already decorated for Thanksgiving.

Daniel looked at the empty chairs.

One of them could easily have held his mother.

Richard poured whiskey.

Daniel didn't touch it.

"You look terrible."

"Thanks."

"Your mother's theatrics are getting to you."

Daniel studied him.

"Why wasn't she invited?"

Richard sighed.

"We've discussed this."

"No. Everyone has avoided discussing it."

"Daniel—"

"Tell me."

Richard took a drink.

"She wouldn't fit."

The answer was so casual that Daniel almost missed its cruelty.

"Fit what?"

"Our guests."

"Meaning?"

Richard shrugged.

"People from my world."

"What world is that?"

"Don't be childish."

"I want you to say it."

Richard's patience thinned.

"Your mother is a retired office administrator."

Daniel stared.

"She worked forty years."

"Fine."

"She paid for my education."

"Parents help their children."

"She buried my father and kept helping everyone."

Richard rolled his eyes.

"Life is difficult for everybody."

"She bought Sarah and me a $350,000 house."

"And?"

Daniel's chair scraped backward.

Richard looked puzzled.

"And you decided she wasn't good enough to sit at your Thanksgiving table."

"Don't confuse money with class."

Daniel felt his face become hot.

For years, Richard's approval had mattered to him.

He had entered the Collins family conscious of every difference—restaurants he didn't know, wines he couldn't pronounce, people who discussed investments and vacation homes as casually as Daniel discussed weather.

He had wanted to belong.

Richard had made belonging feel conditional.

Daniel was only now recognizing the price.

"Did Sarah agree with you?"

Richard smiled.

"Sarah understands appearances."

Daniel stood.

"That's all I needed."

"Sit down."

"No."

Richard's smile vanished.

"You don't walk out while I'm speaking."

Daniel almost obeyed.

The impulse was so automatic that it frightened him.

Then he remembered Margaret's kitchen.

Her notebook.

Half a million dollars.

Her empty Thanksgiving chair.

"No,"
