growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandma laughed.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bennett continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a deadline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty days after the will reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My laughter stopped.<\/p>\n<p>We had already used several.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens if we don\u2019t agree?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trustee sells the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Alyssa.<\/p>\n<p>The Harper house.<\/p>\n<p>The place where I had grown up.<\/p>\n<p>The place I had left.<\/p>\n<p>The place where Alyssa had stayed.<\/p>\n<p>The center of nearly every lie we had uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>Now neither of us could decide its future alone.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa lowered her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>For once, I did not know.<\/p>\n<p>And for once, I did not feel pressured to manufacture certainty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to see it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandma closed the photo album.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the late afternoon light outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow we would walk into the house together.<\/p>\n<p>Not as the legitimate daughter and the questionable one.<\/p>\n<p>Not as the chosen child and the abandoned child.<\/p>\n<p>Not as competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Just two women inheriting a building full of memories, some good, some cruel, all finally stripped of the lie that one of us had to belong less for the
