That wasn\u2019t the same as wanting nothing to do with my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot rewrite the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gestured toward the cabinets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut apparently Dad spent years documenting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian looked at the folders.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I saw something other than irritation.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The effect was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian\u2019s hand tightened against the doorframe.<\/p>\n<p>Grandma looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept my eyes on Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlyssa asked you about him yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what you mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned away.<\/p>\n<p>I followed her into the hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVivian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped at the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody who concerns you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer was better than a confession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe exists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She realized her mistake.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he concern Alyssa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian descended the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>I followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou spent years suggesting Dad wasn\u2019t my biological father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did no such thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let everyone believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot control what people believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou controlled plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She spun around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly do you want from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think truth fixes everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped her.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut lies already broke enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian looked suddenly tired.<\/p>\n<p>Before she could answer, the front door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa entered.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes were swollen.<\/p>\n<p>She held an old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian froze.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa lifted the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even from the stairs, I could see the man standing beside a much younger Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>Tall. Dark-haired. Smiling.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, someone had written Thomas and Vivian, June 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa\u2019s birth year.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian sat down on the bottom stair.<\/p>\n<p>Not gracefully.<\/p>\n<p>Her knees seemed to give out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you find that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn your closet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou searched my things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian stared at her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa\u2019s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked you yesterday. You lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou refused to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stayed silent.<\/p>\n<p>This confrontation belonged to them.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa placed the photograph on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he your boyfriend?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop looking at Candace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has nothing to do with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen answer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long silence.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Vivian whispered, \u201cThomas was someone I knew before your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Dad or while you were with Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandma lowered herself into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>I felt no satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had imagined what it might feel like to watch Alyssa lose the certainty she had used against me.<\/p>\n<p>It felt terrible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad know?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian looked toward the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what William knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another careful answer.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa laughed once, without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything you say sounds like a lawyer wrote it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She picked up the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Thomas my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlyssa\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved William.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian reached for her.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa moved away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word cracked.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in my life, Alyssa looked at me without rivalry.<\/p>\n<p>There was only fear.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it.<\/p>\n<p>It was the expression of someone who suddenly suspected her childhood had been built on information everyone else possessed.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>All four of us startled.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandace, the laboratory called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey completed the expedited analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone watched me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reports arrived twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Alyssa.<\/p>\n<p>She understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen do we meet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan\u2019t you tell me now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Your father\u2019s instructions require all principal parties to be present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost argued.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mr. Bennett added, \u201cThere are two reports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>Her face had gone white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd one for Alyssa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot disclose that by telephone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut him on speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett\u2019s voice filled the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow at nine. Everyone should attend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVivian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa stared at her mother.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not doing anything. William did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian\u2019s shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cAnd he left instructions about what happens after both results are read.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa whispered, \u201cWhat instructions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetters are to be opened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll three of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen her look so frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also a statement William asked me to read before the second result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa\u2019s voice became thin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat statement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett did not answer directly.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he said, \u201cAlyssa, your father wanted you to understand that whatever the laboratory says tomorrow, his feelings about you were never determined by a test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>The silence after that sentence was absolute.<\/p>\n<p>She turned slowly toward Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>And this time she did not ask who Thomas was.<\/p>\n<p>She asked the question Vivian had spent thirty years avoiding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, did Dad know I wasn\u2019t his?\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=23276\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The DNA Results Cleared My Name, Then One Sentence From the Attorney Turned My Sister\u2019s Victory Into Something Else Entirely<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas.
