Scott stood beside the bed. Nothing about the room looked obviously wrong. Nothing explained why every instinct in my body was telling me to get between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe woke up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was wet.<\/p>\n<p>I crossed the room immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you crying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached for me.<\/p>\n<p>Scott stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had a nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I lifted Emily into my arms.<\/p>\n<p>She wrapped herself around me so tightly that I could feel her heart racing through her pajamas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat nightmare?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know,\u201d Scott said. \u201cShe wouldn&#39;t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him over her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you wake me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was handling it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily made a tiny sound against my neck.<\/p>\n<p>That ended the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I\u2019ve got her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked out without answering.<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the edge of the bed holding Emily until her breathing slowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She eventually fell asleep against me.<\/p>\n<p>I did not.<\/p>\n<p>My thoughts moved between two extremes. In one version, I was destroying my marriage by turning normal behavior into something sinister. In the other, I had already waited too long.<\/p>\n<p>Neither possibility allowed me to breathe easily.<\/p>\n<p>Around dawn, Emily shifted away from me.<\/p>\n<p>Her bunny dropped to the floor.<\/p>\n<p>I picked it up and noticed one of its ears had nearly torn away from the seam. Emily had owned that rabbit since she was two and normally treated it with absurd care.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered when she had started gripping it hard enough to damage it.<\/p>\n<p>At breakfast, Scott acted as though nothing had happened.<\/p>\n<p>Coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Toast.<\/p>\n<p>Weather.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Emily barely ate.<\/p>\n<p>Scott glanced at her plate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pushed the cereal farther away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re always hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScott,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Emily watched us.<\/p>\n<p>I hated that.<\/p>\n<p>I did not want her learning that whatever was happening was something capable of making the adults around her explode.<\/p>\n<p>So I softened my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don&#39;t I take you to school?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always take her on Fridays,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s spoon hit the bowl.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny metallic sound seemed enormous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want Mommy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeriously?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll take her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He followed me into the hallway while Emily went for her backpack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to stop doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking me the bad guy every time she gets moody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m responding to what she asks for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s five. We\u2019re the parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she&#39;s scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott&#39;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>That was an answer.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve lost your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I had.<\/p>\n<p>I wished desperately that I had.<\/p>\n<p>In the car, I didn&#39;t question Emily.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I talked about ordinary things. The rain had stopped. A garbage truck blocked one lane. Someone had tied a red balloon to a mailbox.<\/p>\n<p>Emily watched everything through the window.<\/p>\n<p>When we reached preschool, she unbuckled herself and then hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou come get me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Daddy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to ask why.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Alvarez met me near the classroom door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Emily go play for a minute?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She studied my expression and nodded.<\/p>\n<p>When Emily disappeared inside, I lowered my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need your help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Alvarez listened while I described the changes without offering my own theory.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>When I finished, she said, \u201cHave you noticed nightmares?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegression? Accidents? New fears?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas she told you something specific?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Alvarez chose her next words carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don&#39;t interrogate her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That word made my stomach drop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know. But frightened parents sometimes ask the same question twenty different ways because they need certainty. Children can shut down when they feel that pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat should I do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake it clear she&#39;s safe to talk. Listen to the words she chooses. If she says something concerning, get professional guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said something I remembered later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehavior doesn&#39;t tell us exactly what happened. But a sudden, persistent change deserves attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went home carrying that sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Scott had already left for work.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in weeks, the house felt easier to breathe in.<\/p>\n<p>That realization frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>I spent the morning remembering things.<\/p>\n<p>Emily asking me to stay in the bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>Emily avoiding Scott\u2019s lap.<\/p>\n<p>Emily waking at night.<\/p>\n<p>Emily becoming silent whenever he entered a room.<\/p>\n<p>The long baths.<\/p>\n<p>His defensiveness.<\/p>\n<p>His presence in her bedroom at two in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Individually, every detail could have had an innocent explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Together, they formed something I could no longer dismiss.<\/p>\n<p>When I picked Emily up, I took her for ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>We sat outside beneath a striped umbrella while she carefully removed every sprinkle before eating the actual scoop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHmm?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre secrets bad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand stopped around my coffee cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome secrets are fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike birthday secrets?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about bad secrets?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept my face neutral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think a bad secret is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She scraped melting ice cream from the edge of her cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne that makes your tummy hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like a secret you shouldn&#39;t have to keep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the spoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if somebody says you have to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven Daddy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The traffic behind us seemed to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear nothing except my own heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said carefully. \u201cEven Daddy. Even Mommy. Even Grandma. Even Aunt Rachel. Nobody gets to make you keep a secret that makes you frightened or uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked back down.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if they get mad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen that&#39;s their responsibility. Not yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>I resisted every instinct to ask a dozen questions.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I moved my chair closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can tell me anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever you&#39;re ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped one eye with the heel of her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cCan we go home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I paid immediately.<\/p>\n<p>That evening Scott texted that he would be late.<\/p>\n<p>Relief swept through me so quickly that I felt ashamed of it.<\/p>\n<p>Emily and I made grilled cheese sandwiches.<\/p>\n<p>We ate in the living room while watching a cartoon she loved.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway through it, she crawled against my side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I sleep with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No debate.<\/p>\n<p>No concern about creating bad habits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She rested her head against me.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later she spoke without looking up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy says you&#39;re tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says I shouldn&#39;t bother you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never bother me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says you get upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can get upset sometimes. Everybody does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says if I tell you things, you&#39;ll cry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt every muscle in my body become rigid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily immediately pulled away.<\/p>\n<p>I realized my voice had changed.<\/p>\n<p>I softened it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry, sweetheart. You don&#39;t have to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lower lip trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want you sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking care of my feelings isn&#39;t your job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She studied me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if it&#39;s a big thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill not your job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if everybody gets mad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill not your job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>That made it worse.<\/p>\n<p>Tears simply rolled down her cheeks while she stared at me as though she had been waiting weeks for permission.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled her gently against me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She clutched my shirt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t like when Daddy gives me baths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not an accusation.<\/p>\n<p>Not an explanation.<\/p>\n<p>A child&#39;s sentence.<\/p>\n<p>I kept my voice steady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gets mad if I say no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he says it&#39;s our secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes burned.<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself not to react in a way that might frighten her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he say is secret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily shook her head hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you would be mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not mad at you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you&#39;d think I was bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held her face between my hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could tell me anything in the whole world and I would still love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began sobbing.<\/p>\n<p>I held her.<\/p>\n<p>I did not ask for details.<\/p>\n<p>I did not need details to know that whatever had been happening required more help than I could provide alone.<\/p>\n<p>Scott&#39;s car pulled into the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Emily heard it.<\/p>\n<p>Her entire body stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>She whispered one word.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood and took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>For weeks I had been afraid of accusing my husband unfairly.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood that I had been asking the wrong question.<\/p>\n<p>My first responsibility was not deciding what Scott deserved.<\/p>\n<p>It was deciding what Emily needed.<\/p>\n<p>The front door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Scott called our names.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo upstairs and stay in my room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ran.<\/p>\n<p>Scott stepped into the living room.<\/p>\n<p>He glanced toward the stairs and then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the man I had shared a bed with for eight years.<\/p>\n<p>For one dangerous second, anger almost took control.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted answers.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted him cornered.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted the world to become simple.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Mrs. Alvarez\u2019s warning.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Emily\u2019s tears.<\/p>\n<p>If I confronted him now, I had no idea what he might say to her afterward.<\/p>\n<p>So I did the hardest thing I had ever done.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing,\u201d I said. \u201cShe\u2019s tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott watched me.<\/p>\n<p>I could not tell whether he believed me.<\/p>\n<p>But that night, I knew I would not sleep until I had decided how to get my daughter somewhere safe.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=23190\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Wanted to Confront Scott Immediately, but My Sister\u2019s Warning Forced Me to Choose Emily\u2019s Safety Over My Anger<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I opened the door.
