The second thing he heard was a cashier asking her to step aside. He stood in the rear bay of the Phoenix auto shop with a wrench still in one hand, sweat cooling beneath the collar of his work shirt, trying to understand why Marjorie sounded personally betrayed by a bank card declining at a grocery store.

“Derek, you need to come down here,” she snapped. “This card won’t work, and they’re treating me like I’ve done something wrong.”

An impact gun rattled from the next bay. Derek pressed a finger into his free ear. “What card?”

“Olivia’s.”

His hand stopped moving.

For several seconds, the noise of the shop seemed to pull away from him. He pictured his wife’s brown leather purse, the one Olivia usually kept zipped and tucked beside the kitchen counter when she came home. “Why do you have Olivia’s bank card?”

Marjorie answered as though he had asked why she was wearing shoes. “I needed groceries.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“She’s your wife. I’m your mother. We’re family, Derek. Must everything become a courtroom with that woman?”

That woman. His wife of three years. Derek closed his eyes. He should have heard the problem immediately. Instead, an older instinct rose first—the instinct to calm Marjorie before she made a scene, then deal with Olivia afterward.

“Did Olivia give you the card?”

A pause followed.

It was brief, but different from Marjorie’s usual pauses. There was calculation in it.

“She leaves her purse sitting around.”

Derek lowered the wrench onto the steel workbench.

Across the bay, Carlos, the shop manager, glanced over. Derek turned away. “Mom. Did she give you permission?”

“I don’t have time for this interrogation. Yet even then, some part of him wondered whether Olivia had deliberately blocked the card after realizing Marjorie had taken it. That thought came so naturally that he hated himself later for not noticing what it revealed.

“I’m going home,” he said. “Give the card back.”

“You need to come pay for these groceries.”

“No.”

He ended the call before she could answer.

For the next twelve minutes, Derek drove through Phoenix traffic rehearsing an argument with Olivia. He knew exactly what he would say. Why hadn’t she called him? Why had she let things get this far? Why couldn’t she and Marjorie settle one disagreement without putting him between them?

At a red light, he caught his reflection in the rearview mirror and saw the irritation on his own face.

Olivia had warned him about his mother for months.

Marjorie entered their apartment without knocking. She reorganized cupboards. She borrowed things and returned them days later—or not at all. Once, Olivia had found her in their bedroom opening a dresser drawer. Marjorie claimed she was looking for batteries.

Olivia had asked Derek to take back the spare key.

He had refused.

“She’s my mother,” he had said.

“And this is our home,” Olivia had answered.

That argument had ended like most of them: Derek promising to “talk to Mom,” Marjorie laughing when he tried, and Olivia becoming a little quieter afterward.

Lately, Olivia had stopped arguing altogether.

Derek had mistaken that for improvement.

He reached their apartment complex, parked badly, and took the stairs two at a time. His irritation had returned by the time he reached the landing. He unlocked the door and pushed inside already speaking.

“Olivia, what exactly were you trying to—”

He stopped.

The living room echoed.

For one confused second, Derek thought he had entered the wrong apartment.

The sofa was gone.

So was the coffee table, the floor lamp Olivia had bought during their first year of marriage, the framed photographs from the wall, and the cream-colored rug beneath the window.

Boxes stood in neat rows.

Two movers carried another carton through the open doorway.

Olivia stood at the kitchen island wearing dark trousers and a charcoal coat despite the afternoon heat. Her hair was pulled back. Her keys rested beside one hand.

She looked tired.

Not furious.

Not frightened.

Finished.

Derek’s anger collapsed so quickly it left him dizzy.

“What is this?”

Olivia studied him for a moment. “What did your mother tell you?”

“She said your card was declined.”

“And?”

“She said she was buying groceries.”

Olivia’s expression barely changed. “Did she tell you how she got my card?”

Derek opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Olivia nodded once, as though his silence confirmed something she had already expected.

“She took it from my purse this morning.”

“I told her to give it back.”

“How generous.”

“Olivia.”

“No.” Her voice remained quiet. “Don’t come in here and make today about the first decent sentence you finally managed to say to your mother.”

Derek looked at the boxes.
