evidence suggested Thomas himself had touched Derek’s money years earlier.

Derek’s voice changed.

“How much?”

“Nearly forty thousand dollars.”

His throat tightened.

“Where did it go?”

“Into a business account connected to Marjorie’s failed design company.”

Derek stood.

“So Dad funded her with my money.”

“Possibly.”

Derek closed his eyes.

There it was.

Another clean story breaking apart.

Harris continued.

“Thomas may have believed he was borrowing it temporarily.”

“That sounds familiar.”

“Yes.”

“Did he put it back?”

“Not immediately.”

Derek felt anger rising.

At a dead man.

At the father he had spent days idealizing.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

“There’s a note in Martin Bennett’s files.”

Derek’s chest tightened.

“What note?”

“Thomas admitted authorizing the first transfer.”

Derek stared.

“Dad knew?”

“Yes.”

“And spent the rest of his life blaming Mom?”

“No.”

Harris paused.

“The note says Thomas believed his decision taught Marjorie that Derek’s money could be treated as family money.”

Derek sat slowly.

The pattern began before Marjorie’s later fraud.

Thomas had helped create it.

Not by forging.

Not by stealing secretly.

But by deciding Derek’s money was available for a family emergency without Derek’s meaningful consent.

Derek laughed once.

A broken sound.

“Everyone keeps finding new ways to be responsible.”

Harris said nothing.

Derek looked toward the empty apartment.

The same principle had traveled through generations.

Family money.

Family access.

Family exceptions.

Thomas had recognized the damage later.

But recognition did not erase origin.

Derek called Olivia.

She answered.

“What happened?”

He told her.

Silence.

Then she said, “That changes how you see him.”

“Yes.”

“Does it change what he did later?”

“No.”

“Does it erase what your mother did?”

“No.”

“Then maybe it just makes him more complete.”

Derek closed his eyes.

“You’re very annoying.”

“I’ve heard.”

He looked toward his father’s letter on the table.

For the first time, Derek understood that Thomas’s warnings had not come from moral distance.

They came from guilt.

Thomas had known exactly how easy it was to turn love into permission.

Because he had done it first.

Click here to continue reading: PART 22: Thomas’s Own Misuse of Derek’s Money Shattered the Family’s Last
