interrogate him.”

She was right.

That night I returned to Amy’s house.

Russell went home.

Nobody trusted him alone with the RHM files, so Susan had arranged for an assistant to photograph and inventory every relevant document before the office closed.

Russell did not object.

That worried me almost as much as his earlier resistance.

People become agreeable when they know the worst is coming.

Amy made soup.

I barely tasted it.

Afterward, we sat on her porch.

The house on Belvedere Road looked different now that I knew where its foundation money had come from.

I could see Wayne’s theft in the bricks if I allowed myself.

But I could also see Amy’s flower beds.

The porch railing her son had repaired.

The indentation in the wooden step where generations had passed through.

“You keep staring at the reassuring.”

“I’m tired of people pretending certainty is kindness.”

That silenced her.

After a while, she asked, “What if you discover Grandpa often.”

I did.

To a friend’s house.

To the small store near the crossroads.

Wayne knew my habits.

“He planned around me.”

“Yes.”

“Did you warn anyone?”

Thomas’s shame came immediately.

“Samuel.”

“Not
