don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe you didn’t open it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because unlike our fathers, I’m capable of leaving one sealed envelope alone.”

Russell gave him a hard look.

I took it.

The seal was intact.

I opened it.

Inside were two pages.

The first was a letter.

Linda,

If Daniel is standing in front of you, then he did what I asked.

Do not trust him blindly.

But do not assume he is his father either.

I looked up.

Daniel’s expression was unreadable.

I kept reading.

I told Daniel enough to make him come when the unit opened.

I did this because the Mercer records and Wayne’s records must be compared.

Neither side alone tells the truth.

My pulse increased.

The second page was a list.

Five account numbers.

Three property addresses.

One safe-deposit box number.

At the bottom, Mama had written:

The warehouse is only one piece.

The largest remaining asset is not in Daniel’s name.

It is in Russell’s.

I stopped.

Russell stared at me.

“What?”

I looked at the final line again.

Mama had underlined it.

ASK HIM ABOUT THE HOUSE ON BELVEDERE ROAD.

My brother closed his eyes.

Daniel exhaled slowly.

I folded the paper.

“What house?”

Russell did not answer.

“What house on Belvedere Road?”

He opened his eyes.

His voice was barely audible.

“The one Wayne bought with your money.”

“Who owns it?”

Russell looked at me.

“I do.”

The betrayal was almost too simple.

A house.

A deed.

A lifetime of silence converted into real estate.

“How long?”

“Thirty-eight years.”

“And you never told me.”

“No.”

“Do you live there?”

“No.”

“Who does?”

His face crumpled.

“My daughter.”

I stared at him.

My niece.

His child.

Living in a house purchased with money stolen after I was pushed into a road.

Russell took one step toward me.

“Linda, she doesn’t know.”

I held up my hand.

He stopped.

That was the cruelty Mama had predicted.

Not simply discovering what had been stolen.

Discovering that recovering it might hurt people who had never participated in the theft.

Daniel watched me carefully.

Russell whispered, “Please.”

I looked at him.

“Don’t ask me for anything yet.”

I folded Mama’s letter and placed it inside my bag.

Then I turned toward the storage rows.

The auction was canceled.

The evidence was preserved.

But the easy version of justice had just disappeared.

Because some of what had been stolen from me was no longer hidden in cash boxes or ledgers.

It had become someone else’s home.
