flour tin.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, I stood alone in the pantry.<\/p>\n<p>The empty shelf where the tin had sat looked strangely exposed.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Mama slapping Russell&#39;s hand when he reached for it as a boy.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I had thought she was protecting an heirloom.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood she had been guarding the first piece of a confession she hadn&#39;t yet found the courage to make.<\/p>\n<p>Russell called from the front room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReady?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed the pantry door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He waited.<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward kind of tape?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCassette.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne&#39;s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama&#39;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands tightened around the steering
