Loans. Other things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat other things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He accepted the insult without reacting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel helped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith my settlement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith hiding money. photograph.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized myself immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen.<\/p>\n<p>Thin.<\/p>\n<p>Hair cut at my shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting in a wheelchair with my left leg encased in plaster.<\/p>\n<p>Mama stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne stood behind her.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Mercer was on the other side.<\/p>\n<p>Russell stood directly behind my wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p>We were outside an attorney&#39;s office.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered that day only vaguely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn it over,\u201d Carol said.<\/p>\n<p>Mama had written on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Look at Russell&#39;s left morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you take it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became unbearably quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou carried twenty-five thousand dollars of my settlement knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Wayne scared me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice struck the glass walls.<\/p>\n<p>Several people outside turned.<\/p>\n<p>Russell lowered his voice again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I haven&#39;t hated myself for it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know what you&#39;ve done with yourself because you&#39;ve never told me anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wiped his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne said if I refused, he&#39;d tell the police I caused your accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he&#39;d make it look like I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell turned away.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed myself upright.<\/p>\n<p>My injured leg ached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why could he blame you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Carol quietly closed the office blinds.<\/p>\n<p>That simple gesture frightened me more than Russell&#39;s tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her,\u201d Carol said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell&#39;s shoulders sagged.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truck driver knew Wayne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;d been drinking together the night before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that have to do with me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey fought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Everything returned to money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne told him he&#39;d make him pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re not answering me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell drew a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always believed you stepped into the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers went numb.<\/p>\n<p>The room disappeared around the edges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were standing on the shoulder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered heat.<\/p>\n<p>Cicadas.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne behind me.<\/p>\n<p>A truck approaching.<\/p>\n<p>A horn.<\/p>\n<p>Then nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Russell was crying openly now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren&#39;t supposed to be hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought the driver would swerve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho thought?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name barely left his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>My heart hammered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Not Carol.<\/p>\n<p>Not the air-conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>Not the muffled lobby beyond the glass.<\/p>\n<p>I saw only a seventeen-year-old girl beside a country road.<\/p>\n<p>Myself.<\/p>\n<p>Standing.<\/p>\n<p>Turning toward someone she trusted.<\/p>\n<p>Then a hand.<\/p>\n<p>A horn.<\/p>\n<p>Impact.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Carol came around
