graduate school on a Thursday in May.

Not metaphorically.

Not almost.

Finished.

She submitted her final fieldwork report at 11:47 in the morning, closed her laptop, and sat at the dining table staring at the screen as if she expected someone to tell her there had been a mistake.

I was working from home that day.

Claire was at daycare.

Mateo was in kindergarten.

I came downstairs and found Allison still sitting there.

“Done?”

“I think so.”

“You think?”

“The portal says submitted.”

“Then you're done.”

She looked around the room.

“That’s it?”

“What were you expecting?”

“I don’t know.”

“Confetti?”

“Maybe thunder.”

I opened a cabinet.

She frowned.

“What are you doing?”

I pulled out a bottle of sparkling cider I had hidden behind the cereal.

Her face changed.

“You bought that?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“You were that confident?”

“No. It was on sale.”

She laughed.

I opened it.

The cork struck the ceiling.

We both ducked.

“Excellent ceremony,” she said.

“I planned that.”

We drank from ordinary water glasses because I could not find the champagne flutes.

Allison looked at the laptop again.

“I finished.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

I came around the table.

She stood and wrapped her arms around me.

“I actually finished.”

“You did.”

It had taken longer than the original program schedule.

Cancer.

Pregnancy.

Claire.

Surgery.

Menopause symptoms.

Childcare.

Life.

There had been semesters when Allison took only one course.

Months when she wondered whether the degree mattered anymore.

Days when she nearly withdrew.

She finished anyway.

Not because perseverance was always noble.

Because she still wanted the work.

That distinction mattered to her.

Graduation was three weeks later.

Teresa cried before Allison even put on the gown.

Rachel cried and denied it.

My mother took approximately four hundred photographs.

My father complained about parking until my mother threatened to make him walk home.

Mateo wanted to know whether Mommy was now a doctor.

“No,” Allison told him.

“Teacher?”

“No.”

“Police?”

“No.”

“What you are?”

She crouched in front of him.

“A social worker.”

He frowned.

“What that?”

Allison looked at me.

I shrugged.

She thought.

“Someone who helps people when life gets really hard.”

Mateo nodded solemnly.

Then asked, “You get badge?”

“No.”

“That bad job.”

Everyone laughed.

Claire clapped because everyone else did.

After the ceremony, we took pictures beneath a tree near the auditorium.

Allison held her diploma.

I held Claire.

Mateo refused to stand still.

Rachel eventually bribed him with ice cream.

At one point, I watched Allison from several feet away.

Graduation gown.

Short dark curls.

Laughing with her sister.

Teresa adjusting the collar Allison had repeatedly told her not to touch.

For a moment, I saw every version of her layered together.

The woman I married.

The exhausted new mother at the kitchen counter.

The patient with no hair.

The student walking out the door with Rachel’s notebook.

Claire’s mother.

The woman who chose surgery while healthy.

None replaced the others.

They accumulated.

That evening, after the children were asleep, Allison hung the graduation photograph beside one from our wedding.

She stepped back.

“Look at us.”

“We looked young.”

“We were young.”

“You were twenty-nine.”

“That was young.”

“Fair.”

She pointed at my wedding photograph.

“You had more hair.”

“Cruel.”

She smiled.

Then she looked at herself.

“I didn't know anything.”

“Neither did I.”

“I thought getting married meant we'd figured out the hard part.”

“What was the hard part?”

“Finding someone.”

I laughed.

“Turns out that was administrative.”

“Basically.”

She leaned against me.

Two days later, Allison had routine oncology blood work.

She almost forgot.

That itself felt significant.

Once, surveillance dates controlled the month surrounding them.

Now she had to check the calendar.

I took that as progress.

She did too.

The blood draw happened Friday morning.

No scan scheduled this time unless labs or symptoms justified one.

Her follow-up intervals had lengthened again.

Dr. Mehta had called that good.

We had learned not to turn good into guaranteed.

Still, we expected normal.

That expectation was new.

Dangerous perhaps.

Human certainly.

Saturday passed.

Then Sunday.

On Monday afternoon, I was in a meeting when Allison texted.

Can you call me?

No punctuation.

My body remembered before my mind did.

I excused myself.

Called.

She answered immediately.

“What happened?”

“My marker.”

The room around me disappeared.

“What about it?”

“It’s elevated.”

I stood even though I had nowhere to go.

“How elevated?”

She told me.

Not dramatically.

But above normal.

Higher than her previous result.

My mouth went dry.

“What did Dr. Mehta say?”

“Her office called.”

“And?”

“Repeat blood work.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

I closed my eyes.

“One elevated result can be other things.”

“I know.”

Inflammation.

Lab variation.

Hormonal changes.

Benign causes.

We knew the list.

Knowing it did not help.

“Allison?”

“Yeah?”

“Where are you?”

“In the car.”

“Are you driving?”

“No.”

I heard her breathing.

“I was about to pick up Claire.”

“I’ll get her.”

“You’re working.”

“I’ll get her.”

A pause.

“Okay.”

That one word told me how scared she was.

She did not argue.

I left work.

Picked up Claire.

Then Mateo.

At home, Allison was sitting at the kitchen table.

Rachel’s notebook lay closed beside her.

I put my keys down.

The children ran toward her.

She smiled.

Not fake exactly.

Protective.

Mateo began describing something that had happened at school involving glue, a cardboard dinosaur, and an accusation against a child named Owen.

Allison listened.

She asked questions.

She laughed once.

I watched her perform normal motherhood while a number waited inside her mind.

After dinner, we put the children to bed.

Then she opened the hospital portal.

There it was.

Red.

Flagged.

Abnormal.

Numbers had colors now.

I hated that.

“I thought we were past this.”

Her voice was quiet.

“We were never promised past.”

“I know.”

She pushed the laptop away.

“I hate that you learned to talk like an oncologist.”

“I hate that we needed to.”

She stood.

“I don't want to tell anyone yet.”

“Okay.”

“Not Mom.”

“Okay.”

“Not Rachel.”

“Okay.”

She looked at me.

“You're not going to tell your parents?”

“No.”

“Why are you agreeing so fast?”

“Because it’s your result.”

Her face softened.

Then hardened again.

“What if tomorrow is higher?”

“We deal with tomorrow.”

“What if it’s recurrence?”

The question had not been spoken in years.

Not directly.

There it was.

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to tell her the cancer was gone.

I wanted to invent certainty because certainty would have made both of us sleep.

Instead I said, “Then we find out what we're dealing with.”

She covered her face.

“I can't do chemo again.”

I moved closer but did not touch her yet.

“I can't.”

“You don't have to decide that tonight.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“My hair finally feels like mine.”

“I know.”

“My body finally feels like mine.”

“I know.”

“I finished school.”

“Yes.”

“I have an interview next week.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I don't want to become sick Allison again.”

That phrase hurt.

“You wouldn't become her.”

She looked angry.

“Don't.”

I stopped.

She was right.

I had tried to separate her from illness because I thought it would comfort her.

But sick Allison had been her too.

She did not need that woman rejected.

I corrected.

“You wouldn't stop being everything else.”

Her face changed.

I continued.

“You'd still be Claire and Mateo's mom.”

Tears came.

“A social worker.”

She nodded.

“My wife, if you still want that job.”

A wet laugh.

“Rachel's sister.”

Another tear.

“Teresa's extremely difficult daughter.”

“Extremely.”

“And yourself.”

I stepped closer.

“Cancer could demand things again. I won't pretend otherwise. But it doesn't get to erase everything you've built.”

She leaned into me.

That night, neither of us slept much.

At six, we got up.

We packed lunches.

Found shoes.

Signed Mateo’s school form.

Brushed Claire’s hair while she protested.

Ordinary responsibility did not care that cancer might have returned.

There was something brutal and comforting about that.

At the lab, Allison held out her arm.

The technician filled two tubes.

“Results probably later today.”

We went home.

Waited.

At eleven, Allison refreshed the portal.

Nothing.

At noon.

Nothing.

At one seventeen, the result appeared.

She stared.

I stood behind her.

“What?”

“Higher.”

One word.

The room changed.

Not much higher.

But higher.

Dr. Mehta called within twenty minutes.

Scan.

As soon as possible.

Additional blood work.

Clinical exam.

No conclusions yet.

Allison listened.

Asked questions.

Wrote things down.

Old skills returning with terrifying speed.

After the call, she looked at me.

“I have to tell Rachel.”

“Yes.”

She called.

Rachel answered cheerfully.

That lasted three seconds.

Then silence.

Then, “I'm coming over.”

Allison started to object.

Rachel hung up.

Twenty-five minutes later, she arrived.

No inspirational notebook.

No jokes.

She hugged Allison.

Then sat.

Teresa came after we told her.

She cried in the driveway before entering so the children would not see.

Inside, she behaved differently than she would have years earlier.

She did not demand every detail.

Did not call doctors.

Did not offer theories.

She asked Allison, “What do you need from me?”

Allison looked surprised.

“Can you pick the kids up tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

That was all.

The scan was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Tuesday night, Allison stood in the kitchen staring at her graduation photograph.

“Four days.”

“What?”

“I got four days.”

I understood.

Between finishing school and the abnormal result.

Four days of believing one chapter had genuinely ended.

I came beside her.

“Those days still happened.”

She shook her head.

“They feel fake now.”

“They weren't.”

“I was planning jobs.”

“You still can.”

She looked at me.

“Daniel.”

“I know.”

“No motivational speeches.”

“I know.”

She touched the frame.

“I just want to be angry.”

“Then be angry.”

She turned.

“I'm furious.”

“Yes.”

“I did everything.”

“I know.”

“I had the surgery.”

“Yes.”

“I removed the healthy ovary.”

“Yes.”

“I did chemo.”

“Yes.”

“I waited.”

“Yes.”

“I followed every stupid recommendation.”

Her voice rose.

“And it still might be back.”

I let the anger exist.

No gratitude.

No lesson.

No claim that everything happened for a reason.

Finally she whispered, “That's not fair.”

“No.”

The word was enough.

The next morning, we drove to the hospital.

Same entrance.

Different year.

Allison wore the clothes she had planned to wear to her job interview.

She said she wanted to remind herself she had somewhere else to be.

After the scan, we waited.

Dr. Mehta saw us late afternoon.

She entered slowly.

I knew.

Maybe not the details.

But I knew.

Allison gripped my hand.

Dr. Mehta sat.

“There is an area I want to investigate further.”

Allison did not blink.

“Where?”

“A lymph node deep in the pelvis.”

My heart pounded.

“How large?”

Dr. Mehta told us.

Small.

But new.

And metabolically concerning on imaging.

“Cancer?”

Allison asked.

“We need tissue.”

“Biopsy.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“We’re arranging it urgently.”

Allison looked at the floor.

“Could it be something else?”

“Yes.”

Dr. Mehta answered honestly.

“But given your history and the marker trend, recurrence is one possibility we have to take seriously.”

There it was.

Possibility.

Not diagnosis.

But no longer abstract.

On the drive home, Allison did not
