24 – On Mateo’s First Birthday, Allison Read the Letter She Once Planned to Leave Behind and Finally Chose What Their Marriage Would Become

Mateo’s first birthday arrived on a Saturday.

One year.

The number felt impossible.

Allison stood in the kitchen frosting a small cake while I inflated balloons badly.

“You’re tying them wrong,” she said.

“There is no wrong way to tie a balloon.”

“There clearly is.”

The third balloon escaped my hand and flew into the ceiling fan.

It burst.

Mateo screamed.

Then laughed.

Allison laughed too.

“Excellent parenting.”

“He loved it.”

“He nearly had a heart attack.”

“He recovered.”

She shook her head.

Her hair reached her ears now.

Soft curls had started forming around the edges.

She still touched them sometimes as if surprised they belonged to her.

The kitchen looked different than it had a year earlier.

Not because we renovated.

Because we had lived in it differently.

A shared calendar hung near the refrigerator.

Groceries belonged to me.

Finances to Allison.

Laundry to me.

Meal planning split.

Mateo's medical appointments belonged to me.

Childcare schedules lived in both our phones.

No system was perfect.

Sometimes the laundry piled up.

Sometimes Allison paid a bill late.

Sometimes I forgot an ingredient.

The difference was that mistakes no longer automatically rolled downhill toward her.

That morning, both families were coming.

Rachel.

Teresa.

My parents.

A few friends.

No huge party.

Allison had wanted small.

We kept it small.

Before anyone arrived, she placed something on the table.

An envelope.

I recognized her handwriting.

Daniel.

The unfinished letter from the night I first went to the pharmacy.

My chest tightened.

“You kept it.”

“Yes.”

I sat.

“Why are you showing me now?”

“Because I finished it.”

Fear rose.

She saw it.

“Not recently.”

“What does that mean?”

“I finished it after treatment.”

I stared at the envelope.

“Do you want me to read it?”

“Yes.”

I hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

She nodded.

This time, the letter was being given to me.

That mattered.

I opened it.

The first pages were the ones I had partly seen a year earlier.

She had written about exhaustion.

Loneliness.

The invisible weight of our marriage.

The fear that becoming Mateo’s mother would mean disappearing completely as a person.

Then the letter changed.

Later pages had been added months after diagnosis.

She wrote about cancer.

Not as a blessing.

Not as a lesson she was grateful to have learned.

She explicitly rejected that idea.

Cancer had terrified her.

Hurt her.

Taken things she did not willingly surrender.

But it had also removed our ability to pretend.

She wrote that I had changed.

Then she corrected herself.

She wrote that I had behaved differently for long enough that she had stopped calling it temporary.

I stopped reading.

My eyes blurred.

“Allison.”

“Keep going.”

I did.

She wrote that trust had returned in pieces.

A washed bottle.

A pharmacy run.

A night feeding.

A pediatrician appointment.

A boundary defended without being asked.

A disagreement survived without turning into a referendum on love.

Then came the final paragraph.

I read it twice.

She had originally intended the letter to explain why she was leaving.

Now she wanted it to explain why she was staying.

Not because she owed me.

Not because cancer had made marriage sacred.

Not because Mateo needed married parents.

She was staying because the relationship we had now was one she would choose if she encountered it fresh.

I put the pages down.

For a moment, I could not speak.

Allison sat across from me.

“You don't have to say anything.”

“That seems unfair.”

She smiled.

I wiped my eyes.

“You choose me?”

Her expression softened.

“Today.”

I laughed through tears.

“Still with the qualifications.”

“Forever is made out of todays.”

“That sounds like something Dr. Ruiz would say.”

“She did.”

“I knew it.”

Allison reached across the table.

I took her hand.

“I don't want to leave,” she said.

Not today.

Not while treatment lasted.

Not until a decision could be made.

Simply:

“I don't want to leave.”

I closed my eyes.

Relief did not feel explosive.

It felt quiet.

Like a door finally closing against cold air.

“I don't want you to either.”

“Good.”

“Do I get to write a letter now?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“You’d make it fourteen pages.”

“Accurate.”

The doorbell rang.

Mateo’s party began.

Teresa arrived first carrying fruit and exactly one gift because Allison had requested no mountain of toys.

She obeyed.

Rachel came next carrying a book.

My parents brought a wooden train.

My father claimed he had assembled it himself.

My mother exposed that he had called her twice for help.

Everyone laughed.

There was no dramatic family reconciliation.

There did not need to be.

Teresa and Rachel still had difficult days.

Allison still occasionally became angry about the hidden letter.

Rachel still blamed Teresa for choices that could not be undone.

Teresa had started therapy.

That surprised all of us.

She said she was tired of calling fear protection.

At lunch, I watched the three women together.

Teresa cut fruit.

Rachel held Mateo.

Allison talked about school.

No one had fixed the past.

They had simply stopped letting it dictate every interaction.

My father changed Mateo’s diaper without asking where anything was.

That almost made me laugh.

He caught me watching.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“I know where the diapers are.”

“I'm proud.”

“Don't be condescending.”

My mother laughed from across the room.

“You deserve it.”

At cake time, Mateo stared suspiciously at the candle.

We sang.

He looked around as if embarrassed for us.

Allison helped him blow it out.

Then he put one hand directly into the frosting.

Everyone cheered.

He tasted it.

His eyes widened.

Sugar had entered his life.

There would be no turning back.

Rachel took photographs.

One captured Allison holding Mateo while frosting covered his face.

Another caught me wiping cake from the floor.

One showed Teresa and my mother laughing together.

Ordinary evidence.

A year earlier, I had believed families were defined by big moments.

Births.

Diagnoses.

Emergencies.

Now I understood that those moments revealed things.

But ordinary days decided what happened afterward.

After the party, everyone left slowly.

My parents first.

Then Teresa.

Rachel stayed longest.

She hugged Allison at the door.

“Happy one year of motherhood.”

Allison smiled.

“Happy almost one year of being back in my life.”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“Almost.”

They hugged again.

When the door closed, the house was wrecked.

Wrapping paper.

Plates.

Crumbs.

Toys.

Frosting on the table.

I surveyed it.

“Disaster.”

Allison looked tired.

“Leave it.”

I stared.

“Who are you?”

“Someone who learned mess can wait.”

I agreed.

We put Mateo to bed first.

He fell asleep almost immediately.

Too much cake.

Too many people.

One year old.

We stood beside the crib.

Allison touched his back.

“Do you think we should use one of the embryos?”

The question came without warning.

I looked at her.

“Tonight?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“I mean someday.”

I thought.

“Maybe.”

She nodded.

“That's where I am too.”

“Still?”

“Still.”

She looked at Mateo.

“I used to think uncertainty meant something was wrong.”

“And now?”

“I think uncertainty is sometimes just the truth.”

I took her hand.

“We have time.”

“Some.”

She looked at me.

“Not unlimited.”

“I know.”

“But some.”

“Yes.”

That was enough.

Downstairs, we cleaned together.

Not because I insisted.

Not because she took over.

We simply worked.

I collected plates.

She put food away.

I loaded the dishwasher.

She wiped the table.

When we reached the kitchen counter, both of us stopped.

The place.

The question.

One year earlier, Allison had been barely able to stand.

I had opened the refrigerator and asked what she planned to feed me.

I looked at her.

“You thinking about it?”

“Yes.”

“Me too.”

She leaned against the counter.

“I hated you that night.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She looked at me carefully.

“I think I hated who I became around you.”

That hurt differently.

“Who was that?”

“Someone who was always tired.”

She glanced toward the hallway.

“Always planning.”

“Always anticipating what everybody needed before they asked.”

I nodded.

“And now?”

She thought.

“I still do it.”

“Sometimes.”

“But now people interrupt me.”

I smiled.

“Apparently that's my job.”

“One of them.”

She turned toward me.

“What did you hate?”

“About myself?”

“Yes.”

I did not need long.

“That I thought being loved meant being accommodated.”

Her eyes softened.

“I thought if you loved me, you would make my life easier.”

“And now?”

“I think loving someone sometimes makes your life harder.”

She smiled.

“Terrible sales pitch.”

“Wait.”

I continued.

“But the work feels different when both people are doing it.”

Her smile became real.

“That was better.”

I opened the refrigerator.

Leftovers filled the shelves.

Fruit.

Cake.

Containers.

I looked at Allison.

“Hungry?”

“A little.”

“What do you want?”

She stared at me.

Then laughed.

“What?”

“You asked correctly.”

I bowed.

“Growth.”

She opened a container.

“Cake.”

“For dinner?”

“We’re adults.”

“Debatable.”

She cut two slices.

We sat at the kitchen table at nearly midnight eating birthday cake after our son’s first year of life.

No hospital.

No scan.

No argument.

No crisis.

Just dishes waiting in the sink.

A baby sleeping upstairs.

Two frozen embryos we might never use.

A clear scan that did not guarantee the future.

A marriage that had survived without pretending survival made it perfect.

Allison put down her fork.

“I need to tell you something.”

I waited.

She touched the letter still lying on the table.

“I kept the original ending.”

“What ending?”

“The first version.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did it say?”

“That I was leaving.”

I looked at the pages.

“Why keep it?”

“So I don't forget.”

“Forget what?”

She looked at me.

“How close I came.”

Fear rose.

Then I understood.

Not threat.

Memory.

“You don't want to romanticize what happened.”

“No.”

“I don't either.”

She reached for my hand.

“I don't want our story becoming cancer saved our marriage.”

“It didn't.”

“No.”

She squeezed my fingers.

“We almost lost the marriage before cancer.”

“Yes.”

“And cancer almost killed me.”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

“I don't owe it gratitude for anything.”

“No.”

She smiled faintly.

“But I’m grateful we didn't waste what came after.”

So was I.

Outside, the neighborhood had gone quiet.

The refrigerator hummed.

Somewhere upstairs, Mateo made a small sound in his sleep.

I listened.

Allison listened too.

Neither of us moved yet.

A year earlier, I would have expected her to know whether he needed us.

Now we waited together.

Mateo settled.

Allison smiled.

“False alarm.”

“Good.”

She took another bite of cake.

For once, nothing required fixing.

And the absence of emergency no longer frightened us.

It felt like a life.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: Two Years After Treatment, Allison Faced the Decision She Had
