I worked. That's how we survived."

"Mom worked too."

"Part-time."

"Thirty hours."

"It wasn't the same."

I remembered Marcus asking whether my mother had been happy.

"I don't know how she did it."

"Did what?"

"Everything."

My father laughed.

"Women are better at that stuff."

I looked at Mateo sleeping nearby.

There it was.

The inheritance I did not want to pass on.

Not genetic.

Learned.

Maybe equally powerful if nobody interrupted it.

"Dad."

"What?"

"That's not true."

He sighed.

"Here we go."

"Mom did it because nobody else did."

"She never complained."

I nearly answered.

Then stopped.

Had she?

Maybe she had complained in ways none of us counted.

Tired silence.

Headaches.

Sharp responses.

Sitting alone at night.

Requests disguised as questions.

"I don't know whether that's true."

My father went quiet.

"What's gotten into you?"

I almost said cancer.

But that would have given cancer too much credit.

"I started paying attention."

He did not like that.

The call ended badly.

No shouting.

Just distance.

When I turned around, Allison was standing at the kitchen entrance.

I had not heard her come down.

"How much did you hear?"

"Enough."

I felt embarrassed.

"Sorry."

"For what?"

"I don't know."

She sat carefully.

"Your dad thinks I'm ruining you."

"He didn't say that."

"He implied it."

"Probably."

She smiled.

Then winced from nausea.

I brought water.

She drank.

"Do you know what bothers me?"

"What?"

"You shouldn't need to reject your father completely to be different from him."

I sat across from her.

"I know."

"He loves your mother."

"I know."

"He loves you."

"I know."

"People can love each other and still build unfair systems."

I thought about Teresa.

Fear and love.

Secrecy and love.

They could coexist.

That did not make the harm imaginary.

"I don't want to hate him."

"You don't have to."

"I don't want to become him either."

"Then don't."

Simple.

Not easy.

Simple.

That evening, Allison found the photograph I had taken that morning.

Teresa asleep with Mateo.

She stared at it.

"Send me this."

I did.

She saved it.

Then she scrolled backward through my photographs.

Hospital.

Mateo.

Her before surgery.

The short haircut.

One photograph stopped her.

I did not remember taking it.

It showed Allison asleep after her first chemotherapy infusion.

Her face was pale.

A basin sat beside the bed.

In the foreground, my hand held a bottle while Mateo drank.

"Delete that."

I reached for the phone.

Then she stopped me.

"Wait."

She looked longer.

"I look terrible."

"You had chemo."

"Why did you take it?"

I tried to remember.

"I think I meant to photograph Mateo."

She zoomed in.

My hand was visible.

The bottle.

Part of Mateo's face.

Allison blurred in the background.

She became quiet.

"What?"

"This is what I wanted."

I did not understand.

"To look terrible?"

She elbowed me weakly.

"No."

She pointed.

"You taking care of him without waking me."

I stared at the image.

There was nothing special about it.

No pose.

No milestone.

Just a feeding.

"You did that before."

"Sometimes."

"Not like this."

She handed the phone back.

"I used to wake up every time."

"Why?"

"Because if I didn't tell you what he needed, you asked."

I remembered.

How much formula?

Which bottle?

Where are the diapers?

What should he wear?

Questions that sounded responsible because I was asking them.

Each one transferred thinking back to her.

"I didn't know that was exhausting."

"I know."

She looked at the photograph again.

"Now you know where everything is."

"Mostly."

"You make decisions."

"Terrifying."

"And if you get something wrong, you fix it."

I smiled.

"I put his sleeper on backward yesterday."

"I saw."

"You didn't say anything."

"I was conducting an experiment."

"What experiment?"

"Whether you would notice."

"I did eventually."

"After forty minutes."

"He didn't complain."

"He's two weeks old."

"He needs to advocate for himself."

She laughed.

The laugh became a cough.

The cough hurt her incision.

I handed her a pillow to brace against her abdomen.

When it passed, she looked tired.

But still amused.

"I want to keep that picture."

"Okay."

"Not because it's pretty."

"I figured."

"Because I need proof this isn't just something I'm imagining because I'm scared."

My smile disappeared.

"What?"

"You changing."

I stared at her.

She continued.

"I'm afraid when treatment ends, you'll go back."

There it was.

The real test.

Not chemotherapy.

Not hospitals.

Ordinary life afterward.

"I've wondered that too."

She looked surprised.

"You have?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because crisis makes everything obvious."

I gestured around the kitchen.

"Nobody has to explain why I should make dinner when you just had chemo."

Her expression tightened slightly.

"But six months from now?"

"Exactly."

"When I'm working again?"

"Yes."

"When Mateo's older?"

"Yes."

"When nobody is scared?"

I nodded.

"That's what worries me."

Allison looked at the photograph.

"So what do we do?"

The question felt dangerous.

I could turn it into a plan.

Rules.

Schedules.

A project.

Instead I said, "Maybe we build things that don't depend on me feeling motivated."

She looked interested.

"Like what?"

"Shared responsibility."

"That's vague."

"I know."

I thought.

"If I'm responsible for something, I'm responsible for noticing it too."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Go on."

"Not you saying the diaper supply is low and me ordering diapers."

"Okay."

"Me knowing we're low."

She nodded.

"Not you telling me Mateo needs an appointment."

"Good."

"Me knowing."

"What about housework?"

"We divide ownership, not chores."

Allison stared.

"Marcus?"

"No."

"Rachel?"

"No."

"Internet?"

"Maybe."

She laughed.

"Still counts."

We talked for almost an hour.

Not about cancer.

About laundry.

Groceries.

Childcare.

Appointments.

Cooking.

Family birthdays.

The invisible things.

For the first time, I saw how many responsibilities had never had my name attached because we had never formally assigned them.

They had simply fallen toward Allison.

We did not create a perfect system.

We created a beginning.

Then my phone rang.

My mother.

I answered.

Her voice sounded strange.

"Daniel?"

"Mom?"

"Your father told me about your conversation."

I braced myself.

"I wasn't trying to attack him."

"I know."

Silence.

Then she said something I did not expect.

"Thank you."

I sat down.

"For what?"

"For noticing."

My throat tightened.

Allison watched me.

My mother continued.

"I love your father."

"I know."

"And he worked hard."

"I know."

"But I was tired for about twenty years."

I closed my eyes.

Every memory rearranged itself.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize for being a child."

"I wasn't a child the whole time."

"No."

Her voice softened.

"You learned what you saw."

I looked at Mateo.

"That's what I'm afraid of."

"Then show him something different."

The sentence stayed with me.

My mother asked whether she could bring food the next day.

I looked at Allison.

Not for permission to speak.

For the answer to a question that belonged to her.

She nodded.

"Tomorrow is good."

My mother sounded relieved.

After we hung up, Allison said, "That was big."

"Yeah."

"You okay?"

I considered automatically saying yes.

Then told the truth.

"No."

She reached for my hand.

This was different from making her reassure me.

I had not demanded anything.

She chose to reach.

"My childhood feels different today."

"Mine has felt different for a week."

"Fair."

We sat quietly.

Then Allison's phone rang.

Dr. Mehta.

Her face changed.

Calls from oncology never became ordinary.

She answered.

"Hello?"

I watched.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then Allison sat straighter.

"What do you mean it rose?"

My stomach dropped.

She listened.

"No, I understand."

Another pause.

"When do we repeat it?"

She looked at me.

Fear returned to her eyes.

"Okay."

She ended the call.

"What?"

I asked.

"My tumor marker."

"The one that dropped after surgery?"

She nodded.

"It's gone up again."

I felt cold.

"How much?"

She told me.

Not enormous.

But enough for Dr. Mehta to notice.

"What does that mean?"

"They don't know."

"Could it be the chemo?"

"Maybe."

"Could it mean—"

"I know what it could mean."

I stopped.

Allison pressed her hands against her face.

The photograph remained open on my phone beside us.

Proof of one kind of change.

A warning of another.

For several days, we had allowed ourselves to believe surgery and chemotherapy were moving us steadily toward safety.

Now one number had turned the road uncertain again.

Dr. Mehta wanted repeat blood work in forty-eight hours.

Until then, there was nothing to do.

No task.

No solution.

No useful research.

Only waiting.

Allison lowered her hands.

"I'm scared."

I took hers.

"So am I."

She looked at me.

I did not ask her to tell me it would be okay.

She did not ask me either.

We sat at the kitchen table while Mateo slept nearby, learning together that uncertainty could remain in the room without either of us having to hide it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Repeat Blood Test Brought Better News, but Allison’s Relief Collided With
