Allison had fallen asleep on the couch with Mateo against her chest, one arm curved protectively around him.

I stopped inside the doorway.

She looked exhausted even in sleep.

Her hair had come loose. The hospital bracelet remained around her wrist. One sock had slipped halfway off her heel.

I had lived with Allison for six years and somehow I had never seen her look so vulnerable.

My first impulse was to wake her and tell her I had brought the medication.

Then I understood that waking a woman who had barely slept for four days so I could receive credit for completing a task hours late would be another way of making the moment about me.

I placed the pharmacy bag on the coffee table.

That was when I saw the folded paper.

It lay partly beneath the hospital folder.

I thought it was another discharge sheet until I noticed Allison’s handwriting.

At the top she had written a simple heading: things I need help with.

I should have put it down.

Instead I read.

Medicine.

Bottles.

Trash.

Dinner.

Nighttime diapers.

Call Mateo’s pediatrician.

And at the bottom, written smaller than the others, was the one item that held me there.

Ask how I am.

I read it twice.

Nothing on that list required special skill.

Nothing required money.

Nothing required instructions I could not understand.

She had not been asking me to rescue her.

She had been asking me to participate.

I looked toward the kitchen.

Two bottles sat unwashed beside the sink. The trash bin was full. A delivery box from three nights earlier was still beside the back door.

Evidence was everywhere.

I had simply classified it all as somebody else’s responsibility.

I folded the list carefully.

Underneath it was another sheet.

This one began with my name.

Daniel.

I hesitated.

The letter had clearly not been given to me.

Reading it would be an invasion.

I knew that.

I read enough to understand that Allison was frightened.

Not merely tired.

Frightened.

She was afraid motherhood would leave her carrying the baby, the house, and me.
