up.”

“Where?”

“She wouldn’t say.”

Marianne leaned closer to the phone.

I asked the question that mattered.

“Mom, did you know Dad’s final amendment existed?”

Silence.

Then, finally:

“Yes.”

Addison sat down.

I continued.

“Did you know I was co-trustee?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know you could be removed if my interest was transferred without consent?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you act like the amendment never existed?”

Mom started crying.

Not loudly.

Not theatrically.

I had heard her perform tears before.

These sounded different.

“Because Evelyn told me the original would never surface.”

My blood went cold.

“Why would she say that?”

Mom whispered, “Because she burned it.”

Marianne closed her eyes.

I stared at the authenticated amendment copy on my phone screen.

“Then what we found at Ruth’s house is what?”

“I don’t know.”

“It has Dad’s signature.”

“I know.”

“Ruth’s.”

“I know.”

“Evelyn’s.”

“I know.”

“Then why would Evelyn burn the original?”

Mom’s answer came so softly I nearly missed it.

“Because I paid her.”

Addison stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

No one moved to pick it up.

I felt the entire history rearrange itself once more.

Mom had paid Evelyn to destroy the document that could remove her as trustee.

The same Evelyn who later made a recording confessing what she knew.

The same Evelyn who copied evidence before she died.

The same Evelyn who had apparently regretted whatever she had done.

I asked one last question.

“How much?”

Mom gave a figure.

Marianne shut her eyes.

It matched one of the transfers from my account.

The truth settled over all of us.

My mother had used money Dad left for me to pay her own sister to destroy the document designed to protect me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: My Mother’s
