I was a widow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA house I supposedly owned part of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The cruelty of the logic finally became visible even to her.<\/p>\n<p>She had taken money Dad left specifically for me to preserve property in which I also held an interest.<\/p>\n<p>Then she had allegedly removed that interest.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded terrible.<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cYou would have agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the sentence you\u2019ve been using for eleven years, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would have agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou decided what I would have chosen. Then you treated your decision as my consent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Cold air swept in.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me Addison asked, \u201cDid you use any of Ren\u2019s money for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Mom did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Addison\u2019s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe apartment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned back.<\/p>\n<p>My mother finally whispered, \u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Addison stepped away from her as though struck.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my sister.<\/p>\n<p>Her face carried the realization I had lived with for years.<\/p>\n<p>Every gift had a hidden invoice.<\/p>\n<p>Every rescue had come from somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>And sometimes that somewhere had been me.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped onto the porch.<\/p>\n<p>Before Marianne followed, Ruth called my name.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back.<\/p>\n<p>She was holding an old bank deposit slip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found this with Daniel\u2019s papers last month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She crossed the room and handed it to me.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was an account number.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it, in my father\u2019s handwriting, were four words.<\/p>\n<p>For Ren.
