But our mother had built separate realities for each of us and kept them from touching.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth handed the old envelope to Marianne rather than directly to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne examined the seal.<\/p>\n<p>Unbroken.<\/p>\n<p>She turned it over.<\/p>\n<p>A short instruction appeared on the back in Dad\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>For Ren, if anyone tells her she has no place here.<\/p>\n<p>My throat closed.<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat down.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time all night, she looked old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was sick,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne faced her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel understood what he was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what our marriage was like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. But I know what he signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt belongs to you,\u201d Marianne said.<\/p>\n<p>I slid one finger beneath the flap.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Something outside caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p>Headlights crossed the kitchen wall.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle had pulled into the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Denny looked through the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are two people coming up the walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom lifted her head sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denny\u2019s brow furrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne has a county badge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>My mother stood so abruptly her chair struck the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Then someone knocked at the front door.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne\u2019s answer was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing that your own records didn\u2019t begin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held my father\u2019s unopened letter in one hand and watched Denny walk toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that night, I understood that Christmas Eve was not the reckoning my mother had arranged for me.<\/p>\n<p>It was hers.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=22810\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The County Investigator Asked for One Missing Document, and My Mother\u2019s Answer Made Addison Stop Defending Her<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No one welcomed Marianne inside.
