That was my first thought when I turned onto the street at 5:54 on Christmas Eve. My second was that something was wrong. Every other house along the block glowed with Christmas lights, wreaths, illuminated reindeer, or warm rectangles of window light. Number 184 stood almost completely dark.

I slowed beside the curb.

The porch light was off.

Mom’s car was in the driveway. Addison’s SUV was behind it. Denny’s pickup sat partly on the grass, exactly the kind of parking job Dad used to complain about. So they were home. Yet the curtains were drawn and no light showed from the living room.

For several seconds I kept both hands on the steering wheel.

Five years.

I had imagined the return many times without admitting it. In some versions, Mom cried when she saw me. In others, she remained stiff but polite. Addison made an awkward joke. We ate ham. Everyone pretended history had been less ugly than it was. None of my imagined versions began with the house appearing abandoned.

My phone buzzed.

Addison.

Where are you?

I typed, Outside.

The typing dots appeared immediately.

Come in.

I looked toward the black windows.

Why are the lights off?

No response.

I reached into the passenger seat and touched the thick envelope of records. Marianne’s number was inside my coat pocket. Neither made me feel courageous. They only reminded me that I had stopped being careless.

I got out.

The December air carried no snow, only a dry cold that found the gap between my scarf and collar. My shoes clicked against the walkway Dad had poured himself when I was twelve. A crack still ran diagonally across the third slab. I remembered kneeling beside him while he smoothed wet concrete and telling him the line looked crooked.

He had laughed. “Then everyone will know I made it.”

My chest tightened.

I climbed the porch steps.

Before I could knock, the door opened.

Addison stood there smiling.

She had changed since I last saw her, though not in any dramatic way. Her hair was shorter, cut just above her shoulders. Fine lines gathered beside her eyes. She wore a green sweater and gold earrings that caught the faint light from the hallway.

“Ren.”

“Addison.”

For a moment neither of us moved.

Then she opened her arms.

I almost stepped into them.

Almost.

Something in her right hand stopped me.

A phone.

Its camera faced me.

“Are you recording?”

Her smile widened.

“Oh, relax.”

Every muscle in my back tightened.

“Turn it off.”

“It’s Christmas. She’s exactly the same.”

More laughter answered.

My face went hot.

Then the lights came on.

The living room burst into brightness.

There were people everywhere.

My mother stood beside the fireplace. Denny leaned against a bookcase. Two of my cousins sat on the sofa. Ruth was near the dining room entrance, looking deeply uncomfortable. Three neighbors I recognized from childhood stood beside a table crowded with drinks. Someone had hung a banner across the wall.

WELCOME HOME, REN.

At first glance, it could have been touching.

Then I saw the second line written beneath in smaller letters.

AFTER ONLY FIVE YEARS.

Several people laughed again.

I remained in the doorway.

Addison kept filming.

My mother stepped forward, smiling in a way I knew too well—the smile she used whenever she wanted witnesses.

“Well,” she said. “Look who finally remembered where she came from.”

There it was.

Not reconciliation.

Performance.

I could have left.

Every instinct I had developed during five quiet years told me to turn around, walk to my car, and drive south until Maple Drive existed only in the rearview mirror.

Then Ruth looked at me.

Her head moved once.

Barely.

Stay.

I stepped inside.

Addison shut the door behind me.

“Five years and no hug?” Mom asked.

“I wasn’t sure this was that kind of welcome.”

Someone shifted awkwardly.

Mom’s smile tightened.

“We’re teasing.”

“Of course.”

“Your father used to say you were too serious.”

The mention of him came exactly when I expected it.

What surprised me was how little power it had.

I removed my coat but kept the envelope tucked beneath my arm.

Mom noticed immediately.

“What’s that?”

“Paperwork.”

“On Christmas Eve?”

“I’ve been catching up on old things.”

Her eyes remained on the envelope.

Addison moved closer with the phone.

“What kind of old things?”

I looked directly into her camera.

“The kind people should probably handle privately.”

Her smile faltered.

Denny cleared his throat.

“Anybody want a drink?”

“I do,” one cousin said too quickly.

People dispersed by inches rather than leaving.
