He became angry and terminated discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat absolutely still.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb\u2019s pattern had not begun when the company collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>It had begun when someone first told him the truth was inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>Then the accountant said one final thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also found an unsigned draft letter addressed to Mara Bennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Martin Bell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe appears to have been preparing to warn you directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he send it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo record that he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The draft was forwarded securely.<\/p>\n<p>It began:<\/p>\n<p>Dear Mara,<\/p>\n<p>I am writing because I have become concerned that financial information being provided to you regarding Rowe Strategy Group is incomplete and may materially misstate the company\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>My chest hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Another person had almost told me.<\/p>\n<p>Another warning that never arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb had spent years surrounded by people who noticed pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Estelle.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Leah.<\/p>\n<p>Some tried to stop him.<\/p>\n<p>Some helped him.<\/p>\n<p>Some looked away.<\/p>\n<p>And I had been standing at the center of the structure without knowing it existed.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of Martin Bell\u2019s draft was a handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>Call Mara directly after Monday meeting if Caleb refuses correction.<\/p>\n<p>The Monday meeting date was four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pulled up Bell\u2019s calendar archive.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting happened.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb attended.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, the draft letter was never sent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened in the meeting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one knew.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rina, still searching the GrayPeak backups, found an audio file automatically recorded by Rowe Strategy Group\u2019s conference system.<\/p>\n<p>Date.<\/p>\n<p>Time.<\/p>\n<p>Conference Room B.<\/p>\n<p>Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting.<\/p>\n<p>We played it.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Bell\u2019s voice came first.<\/p>\n<p>Then Caleb.<\/p>\n<p>For fifteen minutes, they argued over hidden liabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Martin said the statements given to Estelle were misleading.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb said temporary obligations did not need to be treated as long-term debt.<\/p>\n<p>Martin disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mara puts another dollar into this company without knowing this, I will tell her myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Caleb\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Low.<\/p>\n<p>Controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou work for the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work under professional obligations.
