Warm night air replaced the ballroom\u2019s conditioned chill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe isn\u2019t here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mother sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive years ago, after you and Nora separated, she came to see me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gavin gripped the phone more tightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora went to your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she asked me not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared across the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo leave something for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how do you know it matters?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I remember her face when she gave it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gavin closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five years.<\/p>\n<p>His mother had kept an envelope addressed to him for five years, and somehow he had never known it existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me what\u2019s in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said you didn\u2019t read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen give it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow, Gavin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned against a stone column.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause whatever Nora wrote has waited five years. It can wait until morning. And because right now you\u2019re upset, embarrassed, and probably angry. That is exactly the state you were in when you stopped listening to her the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accusation landed cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>He almost argued.<\/p>\n<p>Then he remembered Nora\u2019s face when he had told her leaving was the best decision of his life.<\/p>\n<p>She hadn\u2019t looked devastated.<\/p>\n<p>She hadn\u2019t even looked angry.<\/p>\n<p>She had looked finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll come in the morning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>When Gavin returned upstairs, Brenda was waiting outside the ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere were you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalling my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that evening, he wondered how many parts of their shared history Brenda remembered differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora left something for me after the divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>But Gavin saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Gavin studied her.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda folded her arms. \u201cWhy would I know about some letter Nora wrote five years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop looking at me like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded, but the uneasiness remained.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the ballroom, I knew nothing about any of this.<\/p>\n<p>Lily had succeeded in forcing Ethan onto the dance floor, where his complete lack of enthusiasm delighted her. She held both our hands and attempted to teach us steps she was inventing as she went.<\/p>\n<p>At one point she spun too quickly and stumbled.<\/p>\n<p>I caught her around the waist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI meant to do that,\u201d she insisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan leaned toward me. \u201cShe gets that from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have excellent balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou walked into the kitchen cabinet yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily laughed loudly enough to attract looks from two nearby tables.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes, nothing existed beyond the three of us.<\/p>\n<p>That ordinary happiness still surprised me sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>Five years earlier, peace had seemed like an abstract thing other people possessed. My days had been built around uncertainty\u2014where Gavin was, what he meant, whether I was imagining the distance between us, whether asking a reasonable question would start another argument.<\/p>\n<p>With Ethan, silence did not frighten me.<\/p>\n<p>Questions did not become weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Affection did not arrive as a reward for behaving correctly.<\/p>\n<p>I had needed years to understand how exhausting my marriage had become.<\/p>\n<p>My cousin approached while Lily and Ethan were arguing about whether a fourth piece of cake counted if it was eaten after dancing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>She looked apologetic. \u201cCan I ask you something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGavin was asking about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sighed. \u201cWhat now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to know whether Ethan was your husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you two have been together for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She studied my face, apparently satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After she left, Ethan handed Lily a glass of water and came beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry tonight became complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled. \u201cThat sounded confident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression grew serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGavin doesn\u2019t get to decide what your past meant just because he remembers it differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>There were moments when Ethan understood the shape of an old wound without needing to touch it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you hated dancing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Lily is about to recruit your aunt if we don\u2019t intervene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was threat enough.<\/p>\n<p>We went back to the dance floor.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Gavin arrived at his mother\u2019s house before nine.<\/p>\n<p>He had barely slept.<\/p>\n<p>Every time he closed his eyes, fragments of the reception returned: Lily running to me, Ethan beside her, my hand resting naturally in his, my complete lack of interest in Gavin\u2019s judgment.<\/p>\n<p>His mother was already sitting at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>An envelope lay in front of her.<\/p>\n<p>The paper had yellowed faintly along one edge.<\/p>\n<p>Gavin\u2019s name was written across the front.<\/p>\n<p>He recognized Nora\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>His stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mother nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>She put her hand over the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromise me something first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou read all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it, Gavin. Even if the first paragraph makes you angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you don\u2019t call Nora afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if she wanted a conversation, she would have asked for one five years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand remained beside hers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she tell you when she brought this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mother looked toward the kitchen window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was crying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer stunned him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had imagined me furious after the separation.<\/p>\n<p>Cold.<\/p>\n<p>Vindictive, perhaps.<\/p>\n<p>He had never imagined me sitting at his mother\u2019s kitchen table in tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she didn\u2019t want revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mother removed her hand from the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked me to give you that when I believed you were finally capable of reading it instead of defending yourself against it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gavin stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou decided that was now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave him a sad look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou finding Nora again decided it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He picked up the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The seal had never been broken.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, he only held it.<\/p>\n<p>Then he slid one finger beneath the flap.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single folded sheet.<\/p>\n<p>He unfolded it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>The first lines were unmistakably mine.<\/p>\n<p>They told him the letter was not an invitation, not a request for reconciliation, and not an attempt to make him feel guilty. I had written because there were truths I had been unable to say while we were married.<\/p>\n<p>Gavin read faster.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The affair with Brenda, I had written, was not the moment our marriage truly ended.<\/p>\n<p>The marriage had been dying long before I learned about her.<\/p>\n<p>It ended when I understood that Gavin no longer treated me like a partner. Every concern became an inconvenience. Every question became an accusation.
