trust.”

Lily’s face twisted.

“So fake the test.”

“Yes.”

Michael said, “But someone ran a real one.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You did.”

“In 2014.”

“Yes.”

“And it showed something Harris didn’t expect.”

“Yes.”

I felt the conversation shifting.

“What?”

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Lily really is related to you.”

“We know.”

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then make me.”

He looked at tightened.

Lily stared.

“Then Susan isn’t my mother.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Not genetically.”

Something inside me noticed.

Again.

The gesture hurt her.

I saw it.

So I finished the movement.

I took her hand.

“You’re still Lily.”

Her eyes filled.

“You’re not my mother.”

“No.”

The word nearly broke me.

“But none of this makes you less real.”

She squeezed my hand.

Michael sat down slowly.

“My daughter.”

Lily looked at him.

He did not move toward her.

He seemed afraid to.

She stared at him for then what?”

Daniel’s face darkened.

“Then Harris’s trust scheme collapses.”

“He’s dead.”

“His scheme isn’t.”

“Who’s running it?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“People who have spent eighteen years making sure no one asks that
