I didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keane shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t the only reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keane\u2019s voice stayed level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael requested a DNA comparison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Lily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a stored blood sample from her pediatric records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Michael.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tested her DNA?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it show?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was inconclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keane said, \u201cThat\u2019s not true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s head snapped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me go quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it show?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keane looked at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe laboratory concluded that Susan was almost certainly a first-degree biological relative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could hear Lily breathing behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst-degree means what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParent, child, or full sibling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Michael.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt couldn\u2019t distinguish the relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew she was that close to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not find words.<\/p>\n<p>All the anger I had felt since Dr. Evans turned that ultrasound screen away from me suddenly became too large for shouting.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>Michael reached toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I moved away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me live twelve more years believing the only secret in our marriage was mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat answer has expired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily stepped beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Not touching.<\/p>\n<p>Simply standing there.<\/p>\n<p>Keane looked toward the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keane pointed.<\/p>\n<p>At the park entrance, a white SUV had stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Its headlights remained on.<\/p>\n<p>No one got out.<\/p>\n<p>Keane\u2019s posture changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know that vehicle?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBenton, Vale and Crowley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SUV began moving toward us.<\/p>\n<p>Keane reached inside his coat.<\/p>\n<p>This time Michael did not stop him.<\/p>\n<p>Keane pulled out a phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have about thirty seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo decide whether you want the truth badly enough to stop running from the people who own most of the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>She met my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I asked her, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No adult had asked her that yet.<\/p>\n<p>She answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to know who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen that\u2019s what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The white SUV stopped at the far end of the lot.<\/p>\n<p>Two men got out.<\/p>\n<p>Keane looked at Michael.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still have the original 2014 DNA report?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it contains something you never noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keane looked at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe laboratory didn\u2019t just identify a first-degree relationship to Susan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt identified a second close genetic match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Keane\u2019s eyes moved to Michael.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJake.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=22507\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Old DNA Report Connected Lily to Both Me and Jake, and the Relationship It Suggested Changed Everything We Thought We Knew<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not take the envelope immediately.
