If he\u2019s been watching the house, he could have seen Susan\u2019s doctor appointment, seen us leave, followed the records request.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said the dark sedan was outside our house,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked toward the park entrance.<\/p>\n<p>A dark sedan turned slowly into the lot.<\/p>\n<p>None of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>It moved past the playground.<\/p>\n<p>Past the empty basketball court.<\/p>\n<p>Toward us.<\/p>\n<p>Michael started the engine.<\/p>\n<p>The sedan stopped thirty yards away.<\/p>\n<p>Its driver door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Keane stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>Lily whispered, \u201cHe followed us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keane did not approach.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he raised both hands where we could see them.<\/p>\n<p>Then he shouted across the rain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael, if I wanted to hurt you, I had twelve years to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael rolled his window down two inches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep Lily alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>Keane looked directly at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if you three leave Bellweather without hearing me, you\u2019re going to make the same mistake Leonard Harper made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s name struck harder than anything else.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my door.<\/p>\n<p>Michael grabbed the handle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSusan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m listening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keane watched me step into the rain.<\/p>\n<p>He reached slowly into his coat.<\/p>\n<p>Michael opened his door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keane froze.<\/p>\n<p>Then, with two fingers, he removed an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told to give this to Susan only if she found Lily herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Keane\u2019s expression was unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father died nineteen years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why wait?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Leonard didn\u2019t trust any of us to decide when you were ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written on it.<\/p>\n<p>Again in my father\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Keane extended it toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one explains what happened in the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=22506\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: My Father\u2019s Second Letter Explained Why Lily Carried My Name at the Hospital, but One Missing Detail Turned Michael Against Keane<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For several seconds, the only sound inside the truck was the rain striking the roof.
