References routed through numbers connected to people associated with Harris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssociated how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one of the pieces I never solved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father managed trusts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That much I knew. My father, Leonard Harper, had spent his career as an estate attorney. He rarely discussed clients at home.<\/p>\n<p>Michael continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNear the end of his career, he handled a private trust established decades earlier. Large enough that several people would have benefited from controlling it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow large?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found one estimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow large?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly over thirty million by 2008.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t money that belonged to your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why would I matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the trust apparently required a biological descendant from one particular family line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re telling me someone targeted me because I could produce an heir?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you that\u2019s one possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words seemed grotesque.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou make it sound like breeding livestock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel seduced me because of a trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know whether that was the only reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only reason?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may have developed feelings for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s supposed to make this better?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know who I was before joining the school?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael reached toward the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlue folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I found it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photocopy of an email dated January 2008.<\/p>\n<p>It was addressed from Daniel to someone listed only as H.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s exactly where you said she\u2019d be.<\/p>\n<p>My hands turned cold.<\/p>\n<p>The next line was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Getting close shouldn\u2019t be difficult.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>Michael said quietly, \u201cThat email was recovered from a computer Dr. Harris\u2019s office disposed of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you had this when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2016.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eight years after the affair.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years before my doctor showed me an ultrasound image that finally cracked the story open.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the page back into the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we find Lily, I want a DNA test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she agrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if she doesn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI walk away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s not evidence. Rainwater gleamed on the sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>Michael drove past without slowing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are we going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Harris house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the route.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer irritated me again.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later we entered a neighborhood of large older homes surrounded by mature trees. Michael turned onto Willow Lane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumber forty-six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I saw it before he pointed.<\/p>\n<p>A pale gray house with dark green shutters stood behind a low iron fence.<\/p>\n<p>The lawn was immaculate.<\/p>\n<p>A dark sedan sat in the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear my heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that Margaret\u2019s car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know her car too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer old one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael ignored the remark.<\/p>\n<p>We remained parked across the street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ridiculous,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSitting here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should think before knocking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have thought for eighteen years without knowing what I was thinking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>Michael caught my wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Physical contact.<\/p>\n<p>The shock of it stopped both of us.<\/p>\n<p>His hand released me immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the place where his fingers had touched.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen years.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t stop me unless you have a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutside our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The air left my lungs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t certain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you certain now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the sedan.<\/p>\n<p>No one sat inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The front door of the Harris house opened.<\/p>\n<p>A young woman stepped onto the porch.<\/p>\n<p>She wore jeans, a dark sweater, and white sneakers. Her hair fell over one shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Lily.<\/p>\n<p>Even after all the photographs, seeing her in motion was different.<\/p>\n<p>She turned toward the street.<\/p>\n<p>Toward us.<\/p>\n<p>For one irrational second I thought she could see through the windshield and know exactly who I was.<\/p>\n<p>Then an older woman came out behind her.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Harris.<\/p>\n<p>They spoke briefly.<\/p>\n<p>Lily descended the steps.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret caught her arm.<\/p>\n<p>The gesture looked urgent.<\/p>\n<p>Lily pulled free.<\/p>\n<p>A man appeared in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen him before.<\/p>\n<p>Tall.
