A woman in blue scrubs hurried toward the medical building while eating a banana. An elderly couple argued cheerfully over where they had parked.

Ordinary life continued around me.

Mine had snagged on one sentence.

Your body shows evidence of something.

I opened my phone and searched my old calendar, knowing perfectly well there would be nothing from 2008. I had changed phones at least six times since then. I searched my email instead.

Hospital.

March 2008.

Nothing useful appeared.

Then I typed Ethan’s name.

I had not searched for him in years.

My finger hovered over the button before I erased the letters.

This was not about Ethan.

At least, I hoped it wasn’t.

During the drive home, memories came back in pieces.

The night of the overdose had always existed in my mind as a dark interruption rather than a sequence of events. I remembered sitting on the bathroom floor. I remembered pills in my palm. I remembered Michael’s voice somewhere far away.

After that came the hospital.

There had been a nurse with red-framed glasses.

A blood-pressure cuff tightening around my arm.

Michael holding my hand.

That detail suddenly bothered me.

He had already moved out of our bedroom by then. He could barely look at me. Yet in the hospital he had sat close enough that I remembered the pressure of his fingers.

I had interpreted it as compassion.

Perhaps it had been fear.

When I woke properly, my abdomen hurt so badly that I asked whether something had ruptured.

Michael told me the doctors had pumped my stomach and performed additional treatment because the pills had made me violently ill.

I believed him.

Why wouldn’t I?

He was furious with me, but Michael had never been careless with facts. He was the man who kept appliance warranties in labeled envelopes and recorded every oil change in a notebook.

If Michael said something happened, I believed it had happened exactly that way.

That certainty survived longer than our intimacy.

When I reached home, his truck was in the driveway.

I found him in the garage measuring a board for a shelf. Retirement had not suited him. Without engineering projects and deadlines, he invented jobs around the house. Shelves appeared where we did not need shelves. Hinges were replaced before they squeaked.

He looked up.

“How did the appointment go?”

For a moment I considered telling him everything.

Instead I said, “Routine.”

His shoulders loosened.

It was barely noticeable.

That frightened me.

“Good,” he said.

I went upstairs.

Our filing cabinet stood inside the closet of the room that had once been Jake’s. Michael maintained most household records, but I knew his system.

Insurance.

Taxes.

Property.

Medical.

The folder for 2008 was thinner than I expected.

I sat cross-legged on the carpet and spread the documents around me.

There were insurance statements, pharmacy receipts, a hospital bill, and two pages from my discharge paperwork.

The admission date matched Dr. Evans’s record.

March 14.

The discharge date was missing.

I searched again.

Nothing.

A second page listed medications. Several names meant nothing to me. One, however, was identified as an anesthetic.

I read the line three times.

Why would I have needed anesthesia for a stomach pumping?

Footsteps sounded in the hallway.

I shoved the papers together.

Michael appeared in the doorway.

“What are you doing?”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Looking for my hospital records.”

“Why?”

“The doctor asked about them.”

His eyes dropped to the papers.

I watched his face carefully.

Michael had aged well, though retirement had made him thinner. His hair was almost white now. Fine lines bracketed his mouth. He had developed a habit of rubbing his thumb across his wedding ring whenever he was anxious.

His thumb moved.

Once.

Twice.

“What does she need those for?” he asked.

“She found something.”

“What?”

I stood.

“I don’t know yet.”

He nodded.

Then he bent to pick up one page.

I took it before he could.

His eyes met mine.

It was the first openly hostile movement either of us had made toward the other in years.

“What happened to me at the hospital?”

“You overdosed.”

“I know.”

“They treated you.”

“How?”

His jaw tightened.

“You know how.”

“No. I know what you told me.”

He looked toward the hallway.

“What difference does it make now?”

The question shocked me.

“What difference?”

“You recovered.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

He walked downstairs.

I followed.

“Michael.”

He entered the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.

“There’s soup.”

“I don’t care about soup.”

“You should eat.”

“Did I have surgery?”

The refrigerator door remained open.

Michael did not move.

I felt my heartbeat in my throat.

“Close the refrigerator and look at me.”

Slowly, he obeyed.

“What makes you think you had surgery?”

“My doctor.”

“What did she say?”

“That there’s scarring.”

Something flickered across his face.

Recognition.

Then it disappeared.

“She could be mistaken.”

“She also found something that looks like it may have been left from a procedure.”

“Doctors make mistakes.”

“So do husbands.”

His eyes hardened.

We had avoided speaking about the affair directly for years.
