My bladder looked normal. My kidneys looked fine. The dull pressure I had been feeling low in my abdomen for the past month was probably nothing urgent. Then the technician left, Dr. Evans entered, studied the images, and stopped talking.

“Is something wrong?” I asked.

She pushed her gold-rimmed glasses higher on her nose. “Susan, before I answer that, I need to clarify something in your medical history.”

I tightened my fingers around the strap of my purse. I had retired from teaching only four months earlier, and retirement had given me far too much time to notice every ache. At fifty-eight, I had expected conversations about cholesterol, bone density, and whether I exercised enough. I had not expected my doctor to look at me as though a piece of my past had appeared on her screen.

“What do you need to know?”

“Have you ever had pelvic surgery?”

“No.”

“A procedure involving your uterus? To me, the image looked like clouds trapped inside gray water.

“There is significant scarring here,” she said. “And another finding near the left side that can sometimes appear after a surgical procedure.”

I stared at the screen.

“That’s impossible.”

“I’m not saying I know exactly what happened. But I would expect someone with these findings to have a relevant medical history.”

“I don’t.”

She clicked through my electronic chart. “You gave birth once?”

“Yes. Michael and I still lived together. We still shared bank accounts, attended family dinners, sent joint Christmas cards, and sat beside each other at Jake’s house. Anyone looking at photographs would have seen a couple approaching their thirty-first anniversary.

Photographs could not show that my husband had not touched me in eighteen years.

Not once.

Not a kiss. Not an embrace. Not his hand reaching for mine in bed.

We had become experts at occupying the same house without accidental contact.

“Dr. Evans,” I said, “Michael and I haven’t been intimate since 2008.”

Her expression remained professional, but the pause told me the information mattered.

“Not at all?”

“No.”

“Was that because of a medical problem?”

“No.”

I looked toward the window.

“It was because of me.”

The blinds cast narrow stripes across the floor. For eighteen years, I had been able to describe what happened without saying the ugliest word. A mistake. A crisis. That summer. What I did.

But Dr. Evans waited.

“I had an affair.”

Saying it aloud still produced the same old tightening in my stomach.

Michael and I had been forty. Jake had just left for college. Our house, once full of music from his bedroom and shoes abandoned near the stairs, suddenly sounded hollow. Michael worked long hours as an engineer and came home tired. I taught English at the high school and had built my life around schedules, essays, groceries, parent conferences, and the dependable machinery of marriage.

Then Ethan arrived.

He taught art. He was younger than I was, restless where Michael was methodical, spontaneous where Michael planned everything three weeks ahead. He noticed details about me I had stopped noticing myself.

That did not excuse anything.

It only explained how easily I began lying.

Coffee after school became dinner. Dinner became afternoons I claimed were department meetings. Eventually there were hotel rooms and promises neither of us had any business making.

I told myself I was lonely.

The truth was less flattering.

I liked being wanted.

Michael discovered us before I found the courage to stop.

Jake had unexpectedly come home from college one weekend. He and Michael went looking for me after I failed to answer my phone. They found Ethan and me at Lake Addison, sitting too close together on a bench beside the water.

I could still remember Jake saying one word.

“Mom?”

Not loudly.

That made it worse.

Michael did not shout there. He did not hit Ethan. He did not demand an explanation.

He looked at me for several seconds and said, “We’re going home.”

That evening, after Jake went upstairs, Michael sat opposite me in the living room.

“How long?”

“Three months.”

“Physical?”

I cried before answering.

“Yes.”

He looked away.

I begged him to forgive me. I offered counseling. I promised to resign from the school if necessary. I said every desperate thing people say when they discover that regret cannot move time backward.

Michael listened.

Then he gave me a choice.

We could divorce, or we could remain married until Jake had established his own life. If we stayed, Michael said, the marriage would continue publicly but not privately.

“I won’t humiliate Jake because of what happened between us,” he said. “But you and I are finished.”

I agreed because I thought temporary distance was better than losing him completely.

I was wrong about the temporary part.

Ethan disappeared from my life almost immediately. I sent him one message telling him never to contact me again. He replied with two words.

I understand.

Within days, he was gone from the school.

Michael moved into the guest room.

At first I tried to repair things. I cooked his favorite meals. I wrote letters. I asked him to attend counseling.

He refused without cruelty.

“No.”

Months became years.

Michael remembered my birthday but handed me cards without affection. He attended Jake’s graduation and stood beside me for photographs. When Jake married, Michael danced once with our daughter-in-law and never with me.

We functioned.

That was the terrible part.

There was no daily warfare. No screaming. No broken dishes.

There was coffee in the morning, utility bills on the counter, oil changes, lawn maintenance, and two people moving around a wound neither would touch.

Eventually I stopped asking for forgiveness.

I assumed this was the price of staying.

Dr. Evans listened without interrupting.

“So there has been no possibility of pregnancy since 2008?”

“None.”

“Was there any possibility immediately before the relationship stopped?”

My mouth went dry.

“I suppose.”

“Were your cycles regular then?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Try.”

I closed my eyes.

Summer 2008 returned in fragments: the lake, Jake’s face, Michael’s cigarette burning between his fingers even though he had quit smoking years earlier.

Then another memory surfaced.

My period had been late.

I had blamed stress.

I remembered nausea one morning at school.
