mattered.

Afterward, my husband made coffee while I sat at the kitchen table.

The cardboard box remained in the closet.

Michael’s letter was no longer spread across the counter.

His mother’s number stayed silenced.

We had begun removing the crisis from every visible surface.

Not because it was over.

Because our home needed yes.

Regret.

Sometimes anger toward the adults involved.

But never anger toward the son he did not know.

My husband looked down.

I watched the tension in his shoulders shift.

Not vanish.

Change shape.

Rachel continued.

She said Michael kept one photograph of my husband in his workshop.

Not hidden.

Not framed dramatically.

Just pinned beside old receipts, motorcycle diagrams, and family pictures.

My husband gave a soft, involuntary amount.

Enough connection to keep him orbiting.

Not enough to let him choose anything.

Another message from Rachel followed before my husband replied.

That photo
