He simply enlarged it with two fingers, stared at the screen, and went still in the chair beside my bed. The room was dim except for the pale strip of dawn growing beyond the window. He read from the photograph without repeating every sentence. His mother had written that if the hospital confrontation failed, she intended to force the issue after we came home. She had listed several possibilities, each one more deliberate than the last. One involved anonymously sending him copies of the dates she had tracked. Another involved arranging for him to receive photographs she believed looked suspicious. A third mentioned obtaining a paternity test without my agreement.

I stared at him. “Without my agreement?”

He nodded once.

“How?”

“She didn’t write exactly.”

I looked down at our son.

His tiny cheek was pressed against my gown. His breathing was soft and regular. The idea of someone treating him as material to be collected—hair, saliva, anything she could obtain—made something harden inside me.

“She was planning to take something from him.”

My husband’s mouth tightened.

“That’s what that means.”

“I know.”

For several seconds neither of us said anything.

The nurse had lowered the lights during the night, and the hospital room still held the muffled quiet of early morning. Somewhere down the hall a cart rolled over a seam in the floor. A newborn cried briefly and stopped. Those ordinary sounds felt almost insulting. The world outside our room had continued as if nothing extraordinary had happened.

My husband scrolled to another photograph.

“There’s more.”

I closed my eyes.

“Just tell me.”

“She wrote that if she couldn’t get a sample herself, she would ask someone else.”

My eyes opened immediately.

“Who?”

“She didn’t put a name.”

That frightened me more.

If his mother had been operating alone, there was at least a boundary around the danger.
