institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had a mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not get to compare your exclusion to mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles lowered his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room quieted.<\/p>\n<p>Then he explained.<\/p>\n<p>His mother had told him Samuel created a trust for him.<\/p>\n<p>He spent years believing it existed.<\/p>\n<p>When Walter found the Mercer Fund, Charles assumed it was the same account.<\/p>\n<p>Walter proved it came from Anna Mercer\u2019s assets.<\/p>\n<p>Charles eventually accepted that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why were you me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Our family apparently stored blackmail the way other families stored Christmas decorations.<\/p>\n<p>Charles had once falsified business records during his company\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Decades earlier.<\/p>\n<p>No charges.<\/p>\n<p>But enough to destroy his reputation and possibly expose him to civil claims.<\/p>\n<p>Greg threatened to disclose it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Walter know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he protect you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Another person.<\/p>\n<p>Another secret Walter carried.<\/p>\n<p>I felt tired of loving a man whose kindness so often required concealment.<\/p>\n<p>Helen saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trying to be better than Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should have tried being more honest than Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave me a small nod.<\/p>\n<p>Charles said Greg eventually contacted him again.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks before trying to place me in Briar Glen.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted access to the Mercer files.<\/p>\n<p>Charles refused.<\/p>\n<p>Then Talbot called.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened him enough to save their messages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are Charlie refused Greg, why did Greg write that someone Grandma trusted was involved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morales answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the binder contains another section.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Behind Charles\u2019s correspondence was a tab we had missed.<\/p>\n<p>A single letter.<\/p>\n<p>From Reverend Paul Benson.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that name.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone in our town
