6 – We Came Home Searching for Walter’s Missing Music Box, but Dana’s Final Donation Hid a Far More Dangerous Secret

We returned home beneath a gray afternoon sky that made the familiar streets look flatter than I remembered.

I had imagined coming back from Italy rested, perhaps carrying olive oil I would never use correctly and photographs I would force on neighbors.

Instead, Emily drove directly from the airport to the charity warehouse where Dana’s donations had been sent.

Laura sat in the back seat.

None of us discussed how strange that arrangement would have seemed one year earlier.

A dead woman.

Her daughter.

Her former mother-in-law.

Searching for a music box hidden by a murdered man.

Life had stopped asking permission before becoming absurd.

The warehouse manager remembered Dana.

Not personally.

He remembered the volume.

“She brought half a truck.”

I clenched my jaw.

Dana had apparently donated Walter’s coats, books, fishing equipment, framed certificates, tools she considered worthless, and several boxes marked BASEMENT.

Emily showed a photograph of the music box.

The manager studied it.

“Maybe.”

That word became our entire hope.

He searched old inventory records.

A wooden music box matching the description had been tagged six months earlier.

It sold the following morning.

Cash purchase.

No customer name.

My stomach sank.

Then the manager added, “There might be camera footage.”

The archive was incomplete, but one camera had captured the register.

The buyer wore a baseball cap low over his face.

Emily leaned closer.

Laura inhaled sharply.

I recognized him from behind before he turned.

Greg.

My son had bought Walter’s music box the morning after Dana donated it.

The security image froze on his face.

Emily whispered, “He knew.”

Maybe.

Or perhaps he recognized something sentimental and wanted it.

But Walter’s warning to Evelyn suggested otherwise.

The music box mattered.

And Greg had retrieved it quietly.

Morales met us at the warehouse.

She watched the video once.

Then again.

“Date?”

The manager gave it.

Morales calculated quickly.

Greg bought the box two weeks before trying to place me in Briar Glen.

That connected the timelines.

Perhaps Greg’s urgency had increased because he discovered Walter left evidence somewhere he could not locate.

We drove to the federal detention facility the next morning.

Greg had not requested to see me.

I requested to see him.

When he entered the interview room in prison clothing, I was shocked by how ordinary he looked.

Older.

Thinner.

But still Greg.

For years I had expected evil to announce itself through some visible transformation.

It did not.

Sometimes it wore your son’s face.

He sat opposite me.

A glass partition separated us.

“You went to Italy.”

I wondered who had told him.

“Emily posts photographs.”

Of course.

He gave a tired smile.

“You look good.”

“I came about Walter’s music box.”

The smile disappeared.

That was enough.

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“You bought it from the charity warehouse.”

His eyes shifted.

“Sentimental value.”

“Where is it?”

“I threw it away.”

I watched him.

Greg had always been a poor liar when silence followed his answer.

As a child, he filled space.

As an adult, too.

Now he immediately added, “It was broken.”

I said nothing.

“Mom, it was garbage.”

Still nothing.

He gripped the telephone receiver harder.

“What do you want from me?”

“The truth would be new.”

His eyes hardened.

“There’s nothing in that box.”

“I never said there was.”

A mistake.

Small.

Immediate.

Greg knew it too.

He closed his eyes.

“Dad ruined everything.”

“No.”

“He couldn’t leave things alone.”

“He discovered you stealing from Emily.”

“You think it started like that?”

“How did it start?”

Greg laughed without humor.

“You want the whole confession because you finally decided I’m a monster?”

“I want facts.”

That answer unsettled him.

Perhaps he had prepared for hatred.

Or forgiveness.

Facts gave him nowhere comfortable to stand.

He told me Walter had found the music box years earlier while cleaning out my mother’s belongings.

The inner mechanism had a hollow compartment underneath.

Walter began using it to hide copies of sensitive documents.

Greg discovered that after Walter’s death.

“How?”

“Dad left a note.”

“To you?”

“No.”

Greg hesitated.

“To Evelyn.”

I felt cold.

Walter had arranged multiple paths toward the truth.

If one failed, another might survive.

Greg learned Evelyn was alive because Talbot told him.

He found correspondence between her and Walter.

Then he understood the music-box reference.

But by the time he searched the house, Dana had donated it.

He bought it back.

“Where is it now?”

“I gave it to Talbot.”

“Why?”

“He said Vale could destroy whatever was inside.”

“Did you open it?”

“I couldn’t.”

Walter had modified the base.

Opening it required a combination.

“What combination?”

Greg looked at me.

“Your anniversary.”

I almost laughed.

Walter.

Of course.

Even hiding evidence, he used something sentimental.

“Where did Talbot take it?”

Greg stared beyond me.

“There was a storage unit.”

Morales had been listening.

She entered the adjoining room moments later.

“Address?”

Greg refused.

Morales placed a photograph against the glass.

Thomas Talbot in custody.

Then another.

Richard Vale.

Then copies of asset-seizure documents.

“The organization you protected is finished,” she said. “Your only remaining choice is whether you help recover evidence or continue carrying liability for people who will never protect you.”

Greg looked at me.

I did not nod.

Did not encourage him.

The decision belonged to him.

Finally he gave Morales an address.

An industrial storage complex near the river.

Unit 408.

The warrant took hours.

I stayed home.

That mattered.

A year earlier I would have insisted on standing beside investigators because fear convinced me presence created control.

Now I made soup.

Emily returned shortly after nine.

Her face told me the result before she spoke.

“The unit was empty.”

I sat down.

“Recently?”

“Completely cleaned.”

No dust patterns.

No abandoned boxes.

Nothing.

Someone had removed everything.

But investigators found one clue outside.

A fragment of burned walnut wood near a drainage channel.

The music box may have been destroyed.

Emily sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.”

I thought of the little brass tune.

My mother winding it when I was six.

Walter repairing it.

Greg buying it secretly.

Perhaps Talbot burning it.

Objects traveled through families carrying meanings nobody could see.

“It was only a box.”

Emily looked unconvinced.

“That’s what you said about Grandpa’s mug.”

“The mug survived.”

“So you are sentimental.”

“Occasionally.”

She leaned against my shoulder.

Then Morales called.

The wood fragment contained residue from adhesive.

Something had once been fixed underneath it.

Investigators also found a tiny strip of photographic film melted to the edge.

Walter had not hidden paper.

He had hidden microfilm.

Laura knew why.

Twenty years earlier, records offices commonly created microfilm backups.

Evelyn had access to them.

If Walter received original microfilm from Evelyn, it might contain complete hospital records from the period of Laura and Rebecca’s identity switch.

Those records could prove not only what happened to Laura.

They could identify every employee involved.

And possibly other falsified deaths.

That possibility expanded the case beyond our family again.

Late that night, someone knocked at the door.

Three soft taps.

Then two.

I looked at Emily.

No one we knew used that pattern.

She checked the camera.

An elderly woman stood on the porch.

Short silver hair.

Brown coat.

A cane.

Morales had shown us her photograph.

Evelyn Hart.

Emily immediately called Morales.

I opened the door but left the chain secured.

Evelyn looked smaller than the crimes surrounding her name.

“Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For which part?”

Her eyes filled.

“All of it.”

I removed the chain.

She entered.

For several minutes Evelyn simply stood in Walter’s house.

Then she touched the wall near the hallway.

“He was here when I came once.”

My stomach tightened.

“You came here?”

“Walter met me secretly.”

“While I was home?”

“No.”

That should have comforted me.

It did not.

Evelyn asked to sit.

Her hands trembled around the tea I gave her.

Then she explained why the music box mattered.

Walter never trusted a single hiding place.

The microfilm inside the box was only a decoy.

I stared at her.

“What?”

“The real evidence was somewhere Greg would never destroy.”

“Where?”

Evelyn looked toward the rebuilt workshop.

“Inside something Greg hated.”

I almost laughed.

“That describes many things.”

She smiled sadly.

“Walter said Greg had complained about it since childhood.”

Emily and I looked at each other.

Then I knew.

The old basement clock.

A large oak wall clock Walter inherited from his father.

Greg hated its ticking when he was young and once tried stuffing a towel behind it.

After Walter’s fall, Greg had wanted it thrown away.

I refused.

It still hung in the basement.

We went downstairs.

The clock ticked exactly as it had for fifty years.

Evelyn touched the lower panel.

“There.”

Behind the pendulum was a narrow wooden strip.

Emily pressed it.

A compartment opened.

Inside rested three microfilm canisters.

A flash drive.

And a sealed envelope.

Not addressed to me.

Not to Emily.

Not to Laura.

Written across the front in Walter’s handwriting were four words.

FOR MY SON, GREGORY.

I stared at the envelope.

Of everything Walter had hidden, this was the first thing he had left for the man who betrayed him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Walter’s Letter to Greg Exposed the One Choice My Husband Made Before His
