It authorized a representative to obtain financial information and communicate on my behalf.<\/p>\n<p>Greg denied knowing anything about it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily produced another paper.<\/p>\n<p>A home-equity application.<\/p>\n<p>Again, my name.<\/p>\n<p>Again, a signature that almost looked right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Greg looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Emily answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne hundred fifty thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg immediately said, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t approved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence told me everything.<\/p>\n<p>An innocent man would have said he never applied.<\/p>\n<p>I sat very still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tried to borrow against my home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bought a new truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou replaced a three-year-old car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana began crying.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed she had not known about the loan.<\/p>\n<p>Greg laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou spent the money we thought we were getting from selling the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana stopped crying.<\/p>\n<p>Emily raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She removed another document.<\/p>\n<p>This one carried the name Briar Glen Senior Residence.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Greg had been talking about Briar Glen all week.<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma, when did Dad tell you a place became available?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe application was filed three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Emily continued carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey described you as suffering from memory problems, confusion, wandering, and an inability to manage money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t wander.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI balance my checkbook every Thursday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana snapped, \u201cShe talks to a dead man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI talk about my day to Walter sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pointed toward the small wooden box on the bookshelf containing some of Walter\u2019s ashes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know where my husband is, Dana. I simply find him a better listener than you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily nearly smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then she turned another page toward me.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>The application did not merely place me in assisted living.<\/p>\n<p>It recommended locked memory care.<\/p>\n<p>And it stated that my residence would be transferred to my adult son before admission.<\/p>\n<p>I read the paragraph twice.<\/p>\n<p>The room became strangely quiet.<\/p>\n<p>They had not planned only to remove me.<\/p>\n<p>They intended to close every route back.<\/p>\n<p>My house.<\/p>\n<p>My finances.<\/p>\n<p>My legal independence.<\/p>\n<p>Even my credibility.<\/p>\n<p>Greg pulled out the chair beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not sit next to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I had never spoken to him that way.<\/p>\n<p>Not when he wrecked Walter\u2019s car at sixteen. Not when he borrowed money at twenty-seven and never repaid it. Not when he took our bedroom three days after his father\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<p>But motherhood had finally reached a boundary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you going to tell them I was incompetent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody used that word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told them I wander.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo qualify her for secure memory care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My suitcase stood beside the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly it no longer looked like theater.<\/p>\n<p>Greg had meant to leave me there.<\/p>\n<p>Emily took a ring of keys from her pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe locks are being changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t throw us out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma has lifetime occupancy. You don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were allowed to stay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana crossed her arms. \u201cThen evict us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily put two envelopes on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg stared at the names printed on them.<\/p>\n<p>His.<\/p>\n<p>Dana\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty days,\u201d Emily said.<\/p>\n<p>Greg looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months ago I began preparing for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve wanted us gone for six months?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor six months I waited for you to give me a reason to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression shifted.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waited for you to ask whether my back hurt from sleeping on that folding bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waited for Dana to make tea without asking me for money afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waited for either of you to remember this was my home before it became your financial plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg sank into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are we supposed to go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six days earlier he had told me Briar Glen had a bed available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hear there\u2019s an opening at Briar Glen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily laughed despite herself.<\/p>\n<p>Dana tore open her notice.<\/p>\n<p>Greg remained at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For one dangerous second, I heard the boy who used to crawl beneath my blankets during thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered the locked door waiting at Briar Glen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made mistakes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou laughed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His brow furrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe night I heard you discussing the house. You laughed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was joking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You were celebrating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cDad would hate this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>I raised my hand.<\/p>\n<p>This answer belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not use your father against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe built this place for our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe built it for us to live in, not for you to steal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loved me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loved you so much that he forgave things you never learned from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I copied him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears finally reached my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe forgave until forgiveness became permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana returned from trying to call her attorney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe isn\u2019t answering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Greg turned on Emily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think one deed lets you walk back into this family and take everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t leave this family willingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou chose your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother was dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me never to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Emily continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou changed your phone number. You returned my birthday cards. You told Grandma and Grandpa I wanted nothing to do with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My head snapped toward Greg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat birthday cards?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa sent them every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI watched him mail them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey stopped when I was twenty-one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you stopped answering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI answered every one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote constantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg moved toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Emily blocked him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the letters?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGregory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped when I used his full name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Walter believe Emily abandoned him because of you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders sagged.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Walter had spent his final years waiting for a granddaughter who had been writing all along.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many letters did you destroy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg whispered, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight or nine years\u2019 worth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote Grandpa every month while he was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPictures. Christmas cards. Everything. I even sent a recording because my calls kept being blocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Greg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou blocked her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Walter had died believing Emily did not care.<\/p>\n<p>Because his own son had made sure of it.<\/p>\n<p>Emily gathered her papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>A memory had returned.<\/p>\n<p>Walter\u2019s final week.<\/p>\n<p>Hospice had placed a bed in our living room.
