That came out wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Heather inhaled. \u201cCassidy, the wedding really does have money problems. Dad didn\u2019t invent that part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut seventy-five thousand isn\u2019t really about flowers and food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out one of the kitchen chairs and sat.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth took the seat across from me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heather hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2019s scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Jason?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Of Jason\u2019s father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Barnes had barely existed to me before that evening. I attended the funeral despite having an exam two days later. He had always been quiet, reserved, almost formal with me. But unlike my parents, he remembered details. My debate tournaments. The books I liked. Which medical schools I was considering.<\/p>\n<p>Once, when I was seventeen, he told me, \u201cDon\u2019t let anybody convince you being low-maintenance means you\u2019re inexpensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hadn\u2019t understood.<\/p>\n<p>Now I stared at a trust bearing his name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeather, how much money was in this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe oldest one I photographed showed more than two hundred thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth\u2019s mouth parted.<\/p>\n<p>I scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>A balance.<\/p>\n<p>$247,000.<\/p>\n<p>Dated before I started college.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen blurred.<\/p>\n<p>My parents had sat across from me and said there was nothing.<\/p>\n<p>They had watched me sign loan paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>Watched me work three jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Watched me hesitate over groceries.<\/p>\n<p>And at the same time, there had been hundreds of thousands of dollars connected to my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCassidy?\u201d Heather said.<\/p>\n<p>I found my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did it go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were withdrawals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swiped again.<\/p>\n<p>Transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Some were small.<\/p>\n<p>Others were enormous.<\/p>\n<p>The dates landed like stones.<\/p>\n<p>One transfer occurred weeks before Heather got her Mercedes.<\/p>\n<p>Another during her first year at Brentwood University.<\/p>\n<p>Another when my parents remodeled their kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped at a withdrawal for eighty-five thousand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was it sent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account name is cut off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I zoomed in.<\/p>\n<p>Only the last word remained visible.<\/p>\n<p>HOLDINGS.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeather, does Dad know you found these?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Jason?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heather made a sound between a laugh and a sob.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound exactly like you did when we were kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike you\u2019ve already decided what everyone needs to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I softened my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another long pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I think they lied to me too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something shift.<\/p>\n<p>Heather told me that for years our parents said I had chosen Boston over the family. They said I resented her. They said I stopped visiting because I considered everyone at home unsophisticated after Harvard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never asked me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was painfully honest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause their story made my life easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Heather\u2019s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you were selfish, then I didn\u2019t have to wonder why I had everything and you were struggling. If you thought you were better than us, then I didn\u2019t have to feel guilty that they bought me a car after telling you college was too expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old anger rose, then passed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you saying this now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause when Jason started questioning the wedding, Dad blamed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if you weren\u2019t so bitter, you\u2019d help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI defended him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course she had.<\/p>\n<p>Heather continued before I could respond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I found the folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed audibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I realized you weren\u2019t bitter because they refused to give you luxury. You were angry because they already had money that was supposed to help you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at the trust document.<\/p>\n<p>The beneficiary section was unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>My name.<\/p>\n<p>My birth date.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need originals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re in Dad\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you get them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t risk it tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCassidy\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood and began pacing.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow morning I could call an attorney.<\/p>\n<p>I could contact the bank.<\/p>\n<p>I could trace the trust.<\/p>\n<p>For years, my parents had controlled the narrative because I had only memories.<\/p>\n<p>Now I had documents.<\/p>\n<p>Then Heather said, \u201cThere\u2019s something else in the folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA letter from Grandpa\u2019s lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only photographed the first page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The image arrived.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was sixteen years old.<\/p>\n<p>It began formally.<\/p>\n<p>Dear Richard and Karen,<\/p>\n<p>I read quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Beneficiary protection.<\/p>\n<p>Notification obligations.<\/p>\n<p>Then one sentence stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Cassidy must be informed of the full trust no later than her twenty-fifth birthday.<\/p>\n<p>I was thirty-two.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had told me.<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>A later paragraph referenced an independent trustee named Martin Hollis.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the name on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Hollis &amp; Crane Estate Law.<\/p>\n<p>Still operating.<\/p>\n<p>Boston office.<\/p>\n<p>That coincidence turned my skin cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Grandpa use a Boston attorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>But I intended to find out.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning I called Martin Hollis.<\/p>\n<p>His assistant asked my name.<\/p>\n<p>I gave it.<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>Not the ordinary pause of someone checking a calendar.<\/p>\n<p>A different kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Wilson?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease hold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Less than a minute later, an elderly man answered personally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCassidy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t ask which Cassidy.<\/p>\n<p>He knew.<\/p>\n<p>My grip tightened on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Hollis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breath escaped slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have wondered for thirteen years whether you would ever call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your grandfather instructed me to contact you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never heard from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo your parents\u2019 address initially. Later to Harvard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never received them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspected that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to the trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Martin Hollis asked the question that changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCassidy, before we discuss the money, I need to know something.
