her.

“For what?”

“Everything.”

Then Rebecca shook her head.

“No. Not everything.”

She read silently.

“She didn’t list every secret. She said listing them would turn the apology into an argument about details.”

That sounded like something Sam may have taught her.

“What did she say instead?” I asked.

Rebecca took a breath.

“She said, ‘I made you grow up inside a story I edited to protect my place in it.’”

My throat tightened.

Anna closed her eyes.

Rebecca continued.

“She said she was sorry she made adoption sound simpler than it was.”

“She said whenever I asked about my birth mother, Mom answered like Anna was some abstract generous stranger instead of a real woman she knew.”

Anna stared at the floor.

Rebecca’s voice shook.

“She said that was cruel to you.”

Anna looked out the window.

“Yes.”

Not dramatic.

Just true.

“What did Carol say about me?” Anna asked.

Rebecca hesitated.

“She said she was jealous of you.”

Anna gave a sad smile.

“I know.”

“No.”

Rebecca turned toward the back seat.

“She said she stayed jealous after she had everything she thought she wanted.”

Anna’s expression changed.

“What?”

“She said sometimes Dad would laugh at something and she would wonder whether you had heard that laugh first.”

I looked straight ahead.

“She wondered if I did something in the kitchen a certain way because you taught me.”

Anna lowered her gaze.

“She wondered if I ever compared her to you.”

“I didn’t.”

Rebecca looked at me.

“Never?”

“Not once after we married.”

“You didn’t think about Anna?”

“Sometimes.”

Anna listened.

“Memory is not comparison.”

I continued.

“I remembered college. If learning the truth makes either of you think blood explains that love, then I have failed one more time. Walter was your father when he warmed bottles at two in the morning, when he taught you to ride a bicycle, when he threatened to sue the dentist who made you cry, and when he walked you down the aisle. Biology did not make him more your father. It only revealed one more way the truth had been withheld from both of you.

I read it twice.

Rebecca watched.

“She was right.”

“Yes.”

Then the next paragraph.

Do not let Walter turn what happened into proof he should have searched harder for Anna. immediately.

Good.

She was not pretending.

“A little.”

Rebecca looked at her.

“But that would be mine to approval.

For once, bureaucracy sounded almost comforting.

Rules.

No one could simply decide the truth should disappear because it made them uncomfortable.

When the call ended, Rebecca said, “I’m filing.”

“Okay.”

“You want to?”

“Yes.”

Anna nodded.

“So do me.

“For years I imagined what would have happened if that letter reached you.”

“So did I.”

“And?”

“I think I stopped needing the fantasy once I saw Rebecca.”

Anna’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Our daughter looked between us.

“What does that mean?”

I smiled.

“It means the most important alternate history ended up sitting on my porch asking nosy questions.”

Rebecca rolled her eyes.

Anna laughed.

Then Rebecca became serious.

“There’s something else.”

She turned to Anna.

“If I call you Mom someday, I don’t want it to mean Carol stopped being Mom.”

Anna’s eyes filled immediately.

“It wouldn’t.”

“And if I never do?”

“I will still know who you are.”

Rebecca swallowed.

“Who am I?”

Anna looked at her.

“My daughter.”

No hesitation.

Rebecca cried.

Then asked, “Can I be both?”

Anna understood.

“Both daughters?”

“Both mothers’ daughter.”

“Yes.”

The answer came so quickly it nearly broke all three of us.

“Yes.”

Rebecca leaned into Anna.

I looked through the porch window toward Carol’s empty chair.

For decades, Carol had feared there would not be enough room.

Not enough motherhood.

Not enough love.

Not enough family.

But watching Rebecca rest her head against Anna’s shoulder while wearing Carol’s cardigan, the fear suddenly looked smaller than the truth.

Nothing had been replaced.

The family had simply become large enough to contain what secrecy had once forced apart.

Click here to continue reading: PART 26: Daniel Arrived Expecting a Stranger, but One Childhood
