I told myself reopening the past would hurt everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds familiar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna gave a sad smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, she was not only a victim in the story.<\/p>\n<p>She had been wronged.<\/p>\n<p>Profoundly.<\/p>\n<p>But later, with time and adulthood and fewer threats, she had also chosen silence.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you do it differently now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat answer is too easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would call Walter after Ruth threatened me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would tell my father no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice grew steadier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would keep you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca froze.<\/p>\n<p>Anna\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I knew what I know now, I would keep you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Anna did too.<\/p>\n<p>I remained still.<\/p>\n<p>This belonged to them.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked, \u201cEven if Dad didn\u2019t come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if your family fell apart?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if you were broke?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent forty years telling myself adoption gave you a better life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gave me my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t exactly the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna reached across the table.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Neither tried to define what they were to each other.<\/p>\n<p>That was progress.<\/p>\n<p>Later, after Anna went upstairs, Rebecca remained with me.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the closed laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a DNA test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I doubted anything.<\/p>\n<p>Because despite every document, every eye color, every letter, she wanted one fact untouched by memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not offended?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what it will say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked toward the stack of papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause every important fact in this family has somebody\u2019s handwriting on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want one answer nobody edited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Then asked, \u201cWill you tell Anna?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think she\u2019ll be hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you\u2019ll tell her anyway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No more guessing what silence meant.<\/p>\n<p>No more protecting people from questions we assumed they could not handle.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I told Anna.<\/p>\n<p>She did look hurt.<\/p>\n<p>For about three seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then she nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want one too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the same reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A week earlier, every adult in this family would have tried to control what another person knew.<\/p>\n<p>Now the three of us ordered the tests together.<\/p>\n<p>When the confirmation page appeared, Rebecca looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo weeks for results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s annoying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca closed the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked toward Carol\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor once,\u201d she said, \u201cwaiting isn\u2019t because anybody is scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time, waiting simply meant the truth was already on its way.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=21982\">Click here to continue reading: PART 22: While We Waited for the DNA Results, Rebecca Found the One Person Carol Had Confided in Without Asking Him to Keep Her Secret<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The drive back from Indiana was quieter than the trip out.
