at her.

She held the wooden box against her lap like armor.

“I left this town pregnant and terrified,” she said. “If I turn around now, I’ll still be that girl.”

“You aren’t.”

“I know.”

The truck passed Grace Methodist.

Anna looked at it.

“So small.”

“It always was.”

“It felt huge then.”

“Most things did.”

We reached Maple Street.

My house stood halfway down the block.

Porch light on.

Rebecca’s car in the driveway.

I pulled in behind it.

Before I could switch off the engine, the front door opened.

Rebecca stepped outside.

She wore jeans, socks, and one of Carol’s old cardigans.

That nearly undid me.

She came down the porch steps slowly.

Anna stopped breathing.

For forty years, she had known Rebecca through photographs.

Now her daughter stood ten feet away.

Rebecca looked at Anna.

Anna looked at Rebecca.

The resemblance was not dramatic.

Not the kind strangers would notice instantly.

But once you knew, it was everywhere.

The eyes.

The shape of the mouth.

The way both women held their hands when uncertain, fingers folded over opposite thumbs.

Rebecca’s face crumpled first.

Anna opened the truck door but did not move.

Rebecca walked closer.

Neither said hello.

Then Rebecca asked, “Did you name me?”

Anna’s hand flew to her mouth.

“Yes.”

Rebecca began crying.

“Why Rebecca?”

Anna stepped out of the truck.

“Because it was my grandmother’s name.”

Rebecca nodded as if that answer mattered more than anything else.

Then she asked, “Can I hug you?”

Anna broke.

She crossed the space between them.

I stood beside the truck while my daughter embraced the mother who had given birth to her and spent forty years watching from photographs.

I looked toward the house.

Carol’s lamp glowed through the living-room window.

For one irrational second, I expected her silhouette to move behind the curtain.

Nothing did.

Rebecca and Anna remained in each other’s arms.

When they finally separated, Rebecca wiped her face.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to say.”

Anna answered, “Neither do I.”

“Good.”

A small laugh passed between them.

Then Rebecca looked at me.

“There’s more in Mom’s box.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Another envelope.”

“For who?”

Rebecca’s eyes moved from me to Anna.

“Both of you.”

We went inside.

Carol’s cardigan hung from Rebecca’s shoulders.

Anna entered the house Carol and I had shared for thirty-one years.

She stopped just past the doorway.

Her eyes moved over photographs, furniture, books, evidence of a life built partly from her absence.

Rebecca brought a large wooden box from the dining table.

Inside lay the blanket, hospital bracelet, photographs, deposit-box key, adoption papers, and several envelopes.

She lifted one.

On the front, in Carol’s handwriting:

Walter and Anna — Read this together before you open Box 214.

I stared at it.

Anna stood beside me.

Rebecca handed it over.

The envelope felt heavier than paper should.

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Carol’s first line made Anna grab the back of a chair.

Before you blame Ruth for everything, you need to know the first lie was mine.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Carol’s Hidden Letter
